Seatek, Fabio Buzzi's offshore race boats do pretty well.

Ray, out of curiosity, what do the 500HP duramax motors put down for torque? Maybe 800ft/lbs? It seems these motors will really be a hot ticket once you really dial them in.

Volvo D-6 435HP. with tansmission about 1493 lbs.
& you get a warranty. while under warranty they come to you for repair no extra charge.

isn't the duramax a 403 cu. in. 6.6 litre?

At Raylar our R&D is focused on tuning down the low rpm torque of our Duramax diesel project and instead widening the torque band so it can be more useful in the 1500-4000 rpms ranges where when mated to a proper trans/drive arraingement this diesel will have a more useful torque and horsepower band that will better fufill the needs of the high performance boat market. We are also working R&D to have this new diesel sound a little more like a big block when running and still not need mufflers or silent choice like system.
Most marine diesels coming to market for the high performance boat community, even some currently being touted have a low rpm torque peak thats almost to high and they fall off quickly at high rpms. This would require special drive reconfiguration that just does not seem to work or be affordable.
The "Brass Ring Prize" here is to develop a lightweight v-8 marine diesel (under 1000lbs) that will have a nice sound, fit in current BBC engine spaces, develop about 600 ft/lbs of torque at 1500 rpms, still have about 750 ft/lbs of torque at 4400 rpms and use about 1/3 as much fuel as the equivalent BBC at the same torque levels. Why no mention of horsepower here, simple its the torque that gets a boat moving and keeps it moving!
To much torque, the drive/transmission combo's get astronomical in price and weight.
To low or peaky torque and drive ratios and transmission systems get wierd! (Don't really work)
No nice sounds from the exhaust and the average performance boaters gets disinterested!
To much weight and the advantage and cost of the diesel engine gets lost in a lightweight hull !
Average fuel ( diesel) economy and the added cost of any quality-reliable -performing diesel package destroys the initial investment return.
This is why were still "cooking in the Lab" , its not going to easy, but nothing great ever is!!

Best Regards,
