oil pressure problem 502mag mpi 2000

I have a Sonic 31ss. When I start up my oil pressure is at 40. after i go for about a ten minute ride it drops to about 28 while I am at 4000 rpm. When I come off the gas It drops to 0 and the alarm sounds but the engine does not tap or make any noise. We hooked up a mechanical gauge and it was accurate also. The mechanic wants to pull the motor and put a oil pump in it but I am not sure if thats the problem. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The first thing to check is the oil filter. When I poured the oil out of my filter it told the story.

If the filter is clean then you are lucky and it is on to step 2.

You hooked up a mechanical gauge and it also went to zero when you let off?I ass.ume a sonic31 ss has 2 motors and this is only one of them. If you have zero oil pressure on a mechanical gauge then, yes, its time to take the motor out. If your lucky it could be something simple like a stuck bypass valve or a pickup problem (fell off) but the first thing that alarms me is it does it hot and it has done it for a while (internal damage?). oil pumps don't really wear out to were your oil pressure would be zero, sounds like your going to see copper or tin on some bearings somewhere, you could cut open your filter,i assume you have already changed filter and oil (possible fuel dilution or contamination),good luck,Smitty
