Priming the raw water pump

If I pull the water pump and put a new impeller in it, what is the best method to prime it, after re-installation, so I can start the engine on a trailer without running the pump dry and destroying the impeller?

Thanks,
Steve

Once you put the flushing attachment
on, and turn on the water, you wont need
to "prime" it.

The pump impeller will not survive without water
being supplied to the inlet.
( be it from a garden hose, and flushing
attachment, or sitting in the water)

Put a little soap in with the impeller if you are worried about it. Once the water is on there should be no problem. If you are really worried pull you lanyard and crank for a few seconds, that should put some water in there before it spins very fast.

I have done this three times. I used dishwashing liquid to aid in reassembly. It also makes it very slippery so even if no water is there for a few seconds it will be fine. Put the hose muffs on and fire it up. It will make some suds for a few minutes then it will be fine.
