cast versus plastic water pump housing??

I went out and bought a Bravo 1 water pump kit and found that it included a plastic housing. My water pump has a cast housing. Is there any reason I would want to replace my cast housing with a plastic one? Or should I go back and get just the impeller and continue to use the cast housing? Do they wear out?

Thanks,
Steve

Re: cast versus plastic water pump housing??

Actually, I'm now thinking of replacing the stock cast pump with a brass one from IMCO, or maybe Jabsco. My old cast one it looking pretty rusty. Can anyone comment on the quality of the IMCO or Jabsco units? Is it a worthwhile upgrade?

Thanks,
Steve

One other question, can I use my stock mercury mounting brackets and pulley with the brass pumps? Or do I need to order new ones?

they say that the plastic housing flows more that the cast one but i have tried them both and didnt notice any difference. i do know that when the plastic ones show wear they need to be replace as a set impellor/housing not like the cast one where you can just replace the impellor only :drink:

Re: cast versus plastic water pump housing??

Merc used to sell the impeller for about $20 for the metal housings.
Now, if you burn up an impeller, you'll burn up the housing. They sell the impeller/plastic housing combo for about $70. You do the math.
