Anybody know of any particuliar problems with these? It's a new 2001 motor with less than 50 hours on it. I heard some comments about bad pistons. Does this motor not last or is it a decent stock motor? It's in a 94 Formula 271 SR1

As a high performance dealer we haven't seen very many problems. They had a few corks with them when they first came out, pushrod recall, fuel line check, exhaust water elbow on the bottom of the manifolds on some.... Thats really about it. They seem to be doing pretty good.

If its a Mercury motor with a serial #, have someone at a dealership run the # for you to see if anything has been done.

Pistons are fine for normally aspirated (non supercharged} uses up to about 550HP. The 496 has an excellent durability history so far, but there is no substitute for good preventive maintenance and a little common sense!

I have seen some cool stuff but this thing pictured here is way too cool! Even I can install it! This thing and your heads and a cam and woooooooo.

I am surprised that GM made the whole thing all solid cast iron. I am surprised the boat dosen't sink. Send them cast iron heads and manifolds overboard, the cam is way too mild for that engine too. How far can you upgrade before reversion concerns? The 101, 103 or 106 cams you offer? Are all safe for marine use use?

So about $ 3,500 for the whole package plus headers if you decide to use them. I heard the stock exhausts are decent; what are your thoughts? To get the same HP from a blower you can easilly pay 6k. So Raylar can set up 2 engines nicely for around 7k. About 1/2 the price of going blown.

heads = 2,7000.00
intake = 2,500.00
cam = 500.00

plus some additional misc. stuff.. gaskets and what not.. not to mention if you can't install yourself,,, atleast another 1k for labor minimum,, probably 7k for each motor.. for I believe 535 hp...

heads alone plust fuel press. increase is 503 hp.. bang for the buck I would just do heads on a h.o.

I think Chris is right. I am wanting to buy a set so bad I can test them but my season is about over and I would like to hear a little input from an actual boat application not just a dyno.
I will say though while you have it off the intake would dress this ugly thing up a little.

I have a pair in a 2002 formula 353 w/ prochargers. 2 seasons w/ no major problems. One thing I would suggest is adding a quality inline fuel filter, if one is not already installed. There was allot of problems with the boost pump inlet screens getting clogged. Merc. sells one but it is a pricey throw away. I am using a racor canister filters. Also, as PWBT33 suggetsed, check to see if all the recalls are up to date. One other thing you might concider, is getting a scan tool, if you do not have acces to one. Its a 500$ investment, that could save you allot of head aches later.

Those prices I saw must have been way off then. But I agree just do the heads and fule pres. incarease with labor would seem an uder 10k deal for 2 engines and 500 HP. Going to 525's and you tie up 35k+. NOt that it isn't worth it but hey options are good too.
