327 to 355/383 ???
Working on my re-power plan for this winter and was wondering if anyone knows if I can convert a 327 to a 355 or 383. I know the block is good...built it for the car...and if I need to buy a crank, probably go w / the 383. Another question is can I use Vortec heads on this block...Have read the DM book and he doesnt seem recommend them for the older blocks...only on '86 and newer.
Any thoughts appreciated... |
Re: 327 to 355/383 ???
If the 327 block is old it may be a small journal block and the 400 crank has to have a lot ground out of the mains to fit a 350 block. The 383 is a strong engine good HP and lots of torque.

If Its A Large Journal 327 You An Build A 355 And A 383 Out Of It But You Must Be Careful Around The Pan Rail When Clearancing For The Rods Because They Are Known For Cutting Into The Water Jacket. Good Luck Laz Mesa Ps The New Gm Blocks Require Very Little Clearancing For The 383 Crank And Rods And I Havent Had Any Cut Into Water So Far

Be careful with cam to rod bolt clearance as well.
