502 Mag cam change?
I know this has probably been asked a 1000 times but I did a search and could'nt find anything specific. Could some one please help?
My buddy is re-powering his 93 Chriscraft from 454 OMC King Cobra to a stock carbed 502 Mag (mid 90's?). The motor has low hours and it has been suggested by the shop doing the install that it would be a good time to upgrade the cam for a little more power. Now money is always the factor, so my question is, is it worth changing ONLY the cam and lifters and if so any suggestions on what cam should be put in? Will there be any hp gains for the $300.00 or is he better off saving the money? Also, does anybody know if the Bravo 1 will fit the King Cobra transom hole or will it have to be filled and a new hole cut? I know this is kinda boring based on some of the posts, but any info would really help. Thanks in advance, Wally. |
Re: 502 Mag cam change?
If it is a gen 5 motor ( hydraulic flat tappet) a good power boost can be had for a reasonable cost by changing to the 454-420 cam. Look in www.cranecams.com under marine cams If it is a gen 6, it is a hydraulic roller. Complexity and cost go up considerably.
