Oil Temps / Pan or Cooler?

Ok, I'm running a HP500. I have two oil temp gages in my boat. The sending unit for one of the gages is in the center of the lower oil filter base at the back lower part of the engine. The other sending unit is in the block on the same lip that the oil pan bolts to.
The gage which has the sending unit in the block where the oil pan bolts to shows 260 degrees when I'm running it hard. The other gage which is reading from the center of the lower oil filter base is reading 225 degrees.
Where should I be reading the oil temp and should the pan oil get that hot???
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Re: Oil Temps / Pan or Cooler?

CMS,
Your saying that the sending unit in the center of the filter unit is reading the oil before the cooler and the one on the oil pan rail is reading after the cooler?
That doesn't support what I'm seeing on my temps.
Yes I'm running a T - stat unit on my boat and I have replaced the stat unit in it to make sure that that wasn't the problem and I seen no change.
Thanks for the help.
