Changing gelcoat color?

Hey guys.!

We looked at a Baja this weekend that we really like. The only problem is the colors. It has in-gel graphics. Can the color be changed somehow, or does it have to be painted over? I didn't know if there was a way to somehow change a particular color once it's in the gel or not...

Thanks for the replies in advance.!

Re: Changing gelcoat color?

You can gnaw the gel off and re-gel, but it's kind of pointless...

There is nothing wrong with paint at all, aside from it being thin and more easily scraped thru. But then again, it's easy to fix, especially if you keep some bottles of your paint colors for retouch. Even the fades can be retouched by a good paint guy (although fades generally add to the cost of the paint job AND add to the cost of future touch ups).

Factory gel is already pretty thick and the thicker the gel is, the more apt it is to stresscrack.

You can paint over the gel. None of that sanding and buffing required when you're done. I never held a paint gun in my hand before starting this project. Each side I do turns out a little bit better. :)

I'm using cheap paint, but I swear you couldn't get a better shine than what I got on the transom for any amount of money. :)

I'm having as much fun playing with this as I do running the boat.

Cuda,
What paint are you using? Just curious. I've done some hands-on projects but have never painted either. I think your project would be worthy of its own thread, with specific details-prep work, type of gun, pressure etc..
Thanks,
Bob G.

I had another thread somewhere when I first started it, I'll see if I can find it.

Thanks Cuda! Your boat looks great! I've used the same paint on my throttle box-but rolled/tipped it. I'd like to spray my entire deck -when I get the nerve.

So I don't have to get the hose under there around the trailer with me. I may shoot it, not sure yet.
