Rebuilding Alpha drive with aftermarket parts

Would any of you recommend using an aftermarket gear set like the ones from Sierra marine to replace a blown set? They have a Heavy duty 1.5/1.47 HD gear set and they are quite a bit cheaper than the Merc gears. Anybody have any durability problems?

In 18 Donzi with a 425crank they lived in an alpha SS, what power you running?

I'd stay away from Sierra gears. They are garbage.

If you don't want to do this job again, shell out the $$ for a set of the Merc heavy duty gears. You'll be glad you did in the long run.

My (ex) drive guy makes his living at rebuilding Alphas. He sells a whole line of Sierra parts, has a 1" thick catalog of their parts.

For gears, however, he will only use Merc. He tells me Sierra just doesn't have the R&D budget for a decent gear program, and they don't hold up long-term.

Good luck.

I agree that sierra make fine products...mostley we use there maintenence items. but when it comes to gears and shafts, Merc ONLY! One of our Drive techs we use worked at a shop that used a variety of aftermarket parts for drive repairs and he said there were to many failures. Penny wise and dollar foolish if you ask me...

I doubt Merc makes there own gears, there are made by someone else, possibly the same company that makes them for Sierra. As long as it's not china or chine or what ever they call that country that makes junk. :hothead:
