Scarab S 30': TRS vs. KAAMA

Who can tell me something about the pro and contra of this two drives? Where are the drawbacks of the Kaama's. Planning speed? Cruising speed? Spare parts?

2x 350 HP w/ TRS vs. 2x 425 HP Kaama

Thanks, Gerhard :)

The kaama will experience some cavitation during take of. Cruise speed is good depending size of boat, power, and prop set up. They say that top end speed is 10% higher with kaama than trs with same power.
I have owned them both. I like my kamma due to the durability and ease of maintenece. u-joints,gears,and bearings are available at most local parts stores. Plus the roost of the kaama is cool. Do a search on kaama and you will have lots of info. Are you looking at a particular boat? Hope this helps

The 425 is a great engine for a 30 Scarab. I had one with 420s.(same engine really) Cruise at 50 mph at 3500. Top speed of 70. If the surface drives are that efficient, 80 mph is possible.

Thank's for your informations. I look at a 1984 Scarab-S with Kaamas, but I'm not sure if it's a good deal (it looks like a hard selling boat). The alternative would be a 1982 Scarab II w/ TRS?? It's not easy for me sitting here in Austria / Europe searching for a boat in USA... Theses boats are very rare in Europe.

Gerhard M--
Sometimes kaamas are harder to sell due to the fact that people are scared of them. That 34 scarab will preform really well with Kammas and 425's mid 70's easy. People are becoming leery of the trs models also. It is a parts issue. In my opinion both are good drives if maintained well. There are a ton of reliable trs models in the us and many kamma boats still around. A plus with the Kaamas is the hyd steering, I would be more apt to look at the other aspects of the two boats. condition, hours, amenities, and be sure to have a good survey done. just my .02 worth. There are lots of guys on this board with tons of knowledge that can shed some light for you.
good luck!

With the Kaama's in my 302 Formula, the minimum planing speed us just under 30.

Go with the Kaama's, you'll love it. I know I do.

They aren't any harder going forward, but backing up is problematic at best. :)
