383 Strokers?
 

How much N/A reliable horseys can you build out of one, and roughly how much $$ would it take to build one from scratch? (all new parts)

I just finished a 383 from scratch for my '68 Camaro. All top shelf stuff with hyd. roller, iron eagle heads, and Holley Stealth Ram FI. With machining it was nearly $10k. Almost $3k of that was the FI setup. Haven't dyno'd it but estimates are in the range of 425-450hp.

I wish I could afford two more for my 28SS!

You might take a look at the Summit catalog, they sell GMs 383 crate motor for ~$4300, last time I looked. It has a 4340 crank, PM rods, vortec heads, hydralic roller cam (112LSA), 4 bolt mains, makes 330hp, +400 ft/lbs of torque. Increasing power to ~400hp can be achieved by swapping in GMs hotter cam part# 24502586 (112LSA) and cam kit. May not be perfect, but for ~$5000 it wouldn't be bad.

and NOW GM has the ZZ383... check er out...

otherwise... if you did all of the work yourself and used GOOD components you'd be in the 5 - 7K range dependng upon what you used...

depending upon what exhaust you are gonna run and how high you want to spin em is gonna determine what you can make for power... in marine trim with some longer exhaust tubes 450 hp is gonna roughly be about the plateau without getting too wild and keepig things around 5500 rpm for a WOT rpm... maybe a few hundred rpm higher.

actually if i was gonna spend the money to put a new sbc together i'd bite the bullet and start thinking 427 + CID from the mouse... 525/ 525 in N/A form is NOT difficult to achieve while keeping it relatively tame ;)

GM Performance Parts build the ZZ383 with 425 hp @ 5400 rpm and 449 Ft.Lbs torque @ 4500 rpm.

Installed cam is perfect for marine use too.

I have been thinking about putting this in my next boat, I would have to ditch the Aluminum heads though, or install closed cooling.

i build a 383 about 12 years ago, ultra tech did all the machine work and i put it together. 420 hp huge power took it apart 6 yrs ago to freshen up and it looked perfect just put bearings & rings in it still runs great. you'll love them. pushs a old 2800lbs 19' donzi style boat i have to
77mph with a surface drive.

Last month I helped a buddy install a pair of ZZ383's in his 26'Sutphen. He had a set of CMI's and Holley 750's and Air-Gap intakes. They work incredible, picked up 10 mph of the stock 260's

So far he's logged close to 30 hrs with zero isssues.

you are going to build 383's,dont be silly go with 400 small blocks it's like a 305 to a 350

N/A...reliable.. yes... mine is.. :cool: solid roller 383 home built. around 570 hp. spins 6000 rpm all day long. all parts were brand new. holley, edelbrock, AFR, JE, eagle, crane, ferrea, cometic. guess i had around $6000-$7000 into it. I lost count ;) but it does run on 110 octane :eek: no problems this year.

Last year ran a 500+ hp 383 very reliable, ran great, all season. no problems.

What was it about those steam holes and having to drill holes in the heads to match them? I remember the thread, but I am NO expert.

The 400 in. Chevy block has siamesed cylinders.
What it means is that there are no water passages between the cylinder bores. Water gets trapped in pockets and turns to steam. Holes drilled in these critical areas allow the trapped water to flow from the block into the head.
