Bottom Paint Removal

I just sold my boat and am in the big search. I recently ran across one of interest however they have put bottom paint on it, Any chances of removal and getting the gel white again? If so at what cost and who much work. Its a 2000 and has only one caot of paint.

Thanks

I guess it depends on if it was done properly the first time. For the bottom paint to adhere, the bottom should have been sanded first. If you are lucky, they just used a chemical stripper/cleaner and then painted. If not, even after you remove the paint, you will still have a lot of work to do.

Good luck :)

I have done this a couple of times, it's messy and time consuming! That being said, if the boat is a good buy, it's well worth the effort.
Begin by setting the boat up on blocks under the keel and jack stands (2) toward front and (2) at the stearn! Solid wooden blocks are the safest!!
Then you take a sharp 2" putty knife and work a 1sq. ft. area at a time! Like I said, it takes time!
After you have scraped the paint off you will be left with a film of paint stain, the next step is to apply spray on "Easy Off" oven cleaner (Use Easy Off, the cheaper brands don't work as well). Let it stay on for about 30 minutes, scrub throughly with a "very" stiff brissle brush and then hose off. You can do about a 15sq. ft. section at a time. After you are satisfied that you have removed all of the paint, wash the bottom of the boat with a good mild soap & rinse again.

Once you get going it's not that bad!

Good luck

Get out the Easy off oven cleaner... Works like a charm!

After you get the big chunks off you can use soda blast in a sand blaster.
