OMG!! a ski boat passed me at 70mph

I was running WOT in my baja hammer and this ski pro extreme walked me. I did not think there were ski applications that fast.

At least it wasn't a wave runner. ;)

Have a friend that put an LT1 motor in a Tige and it ran 70....you need a Fountain :D

Re: OMG!! a ski boat passed me at 70mph

I have a hard time comprehending that, unless it was a vee drive wakeboard boat. I have a friend building some of these, and he has a setup that will run over 60 with all the weight moved aft (but normal weighting gives a 52 mph top end). A straight inboard tournament ski boat would need 500hp to run 70. And it would break your spine if you tried to cut thru chop at those speeds.

A 410hp LT5 vette motor in a (wasnt it a Mastercraft) ski boat back years ago was offered as a special edition. It only ran high 50's.

What does a Tige hull have different that let it run so hard?

Put enough motor in anything and it will go fast. Doesn't make it a great idea though.

I checked out the website and these are stern drive boats. They claim on has a top speed of 70+mph. Check it out at www.skiproboats.com it is the 2100SS.

I am to lazy to read all the lit, is it a flat bottom or a v

The vette boat was a Malibu, What is the point of a 70 Mph ski boat anyway, big waste of money if you ask me. Mr P has been on crutches since he fell on 8/14 going about 40 :( so who needs 70 in a 20ft ski boat

Re: OMG!! a ski boat passed me at 70mph

And by the way I am sick of those wake board boats with their water bags in the aft area, all they do is go in circles creating big a** wakes, sorry just a pet peeve :D I used to hate wave runners, these guys are worse

Re: OMG!! a ski boat passed me at 70mph

I really did not get a good look at the hull but the motor was at the back not in the center. It did not look like your regular boat but it said ski pro and down the side it said extreme. We were right around 70mph he was slowly pulling me. It was right at sunset so he probablt lives out here on the lake like me. I am gonna go and see if I can find him again tommorrow.

Re: OMG!! a ski boat passed me at 70mph

If it's a sterndrive boat, then it doesn't count.
I don't care what they write down the side of it, if it is a sterndrive, then it is a "real" boat.

Tournament boats are for pulling stuff on a rope. That's all. Pretty much single purpose. We had a Nautique in the late 60's and it was a flatbottom straight inboard, but it wasn't "yet" a single purpose boat like it (and all of them) eventually became.

A friend has a Supra V drive, and it is a decent "pulling" boat, but is geared more for a lake cruiser. Still rides harsh but nothing like a tournament boat. And this lake is FULL of tournament boats for some reason...

I remember skiing behind a Whaler, an Astroglass bass boat, an aluminum vee hull with a tiller outboard, cuddy cabin boats, a 26' Carver, you name it. Since when did Junior get so good that he needed a $40k tournament boat to pull him?

Re: OMG!! a ski boat passed me at 70mph

A few years ago a friend of mine had a Malibu with a limited edition Monsoon engine in it. I think it was put together by Indmar. It was rated at 370 hp and it ran high 50's. Real ski boats have too much hull in the water to go fast. A Donzi with the same power would go 20 mph faster.

That sums it up perfectly. I had a Ski Nautique for 13 years. Mine ran 52 MPH and I outran EVERY Nautique, Mastercraft, Ski Supreme, and American Skier I ever raced. I never had an inboard ski boat outrun me including a Barefoot Nautique with a 454.

A Nautique has a hull speed of between 49-53 MPH. If you stack 3000 HP in one it will max out in that range and then start beating you to death.

All of my experience with these boats were the 1980-1996 year models. They may have made some changes on the newer ones....now that I'm out of shape...skiing doesn't garner the attention it once did :drink: :D

My mom has a 92 or 93 Mastercraft "Stars and Stripes" anniversary boat. It came with the Corvette motor. LT1? Awesome boat but barely runs 50mph. Acceleration is incredible. Malibu also has a Corvette boat. The back actually looks like the rear of a vette.

My Buddy has a Malibu with the Corvette in it. Pulls like a tractor, any more than about 1/4 throttle and I can't hang on from a deep water start. It's still new so were not sure of the top end. I think mid to high 50's. But top end wasn't the purpose of the boat. It was at the New York boat show this past year so some of you might have seen it. It sure is pretty. Doug

They may be fast on flat water but get any bit of chop in the mix and they will be misserable! A buddy took his mastercraft to LOTO one year since his cig was inop. He was fine till we got out of the protected coves into the more open water with traffic. One of his passengers to this day still tells me he is peeing blood (joking ofcourse) from that beating they all took that weekend in the skiboat! :D By the last day i had almost all his passengers piled into my Scarab cause they couldnt take it anymore! LOL

Maybe not in the competition dumbass wake making kind, but my ski boat will run somewhere around 90. Then again, it's a blown 21' v-drive Schiada River Cruiser. A ski race boat... :D

I don't even want to think about falling at 90. Those guys are nuts!

Yeah, I know. I just thought I'd jerk a few chains. I don't think I'd want to be in a competition boat at anywhere over about 50... They ride rather wet and I've seen quite a few of them that really want to bow steer. No thanks. :D

He had a bunch of mods done to it but I was on it with 4 people and we hit 66 GPS....MY handheld! He was turning a monster prop and had a whacked out gear ratio... It was insane... He is a rich kid who's father wouldnt buy him a go-fast to go with his ski boat so he hopped up his Tige BIG TIME. I will get in touch with him and find out the specs.... It was about 5 years ago...I know he had to put tabs on it as well.

OK guys , found out a little bit about the boat that beat me. It is a sterndrive rear engine w/blower. I am not sure about displacment. My friend/neighbor says he had the boat custom built by marine technologies in TX. It is claimed to be a ski boat but has all the characteristics as a powerboat.

If a ski boat passed me at 70, and was NOT pulling a grinning skier flipping me off, I wouldn't count it. :D

Re: OMG!! a ski boat passed me at 70mph

Spoke to my buddies father ( my buddy is in the clink) and he kinda new some things about the mods on his Tige.... he wasnt so specific due to his basic knowledge.... They moved back the LT1 motor ( which had some serious mods to it )and it had a modified trimmable pulse drive. They GPS'd it at 69.2 mph. It wasnt much good for skiing and it was broke constantly. It had straight thru hull exhaust. Thats what he knew and I am not sure what else was done. The pulse drive wigged me out because it was almost under the boat ... or at least I thought it was. He said they have since scrapped that project and they are going to modify a Malibu when junior gets out.....they want to rig up an Arneson with a 496 somehow... he promised me pics in the Spring.

70 is really pushing it ,even with the vette engine, most are running a 14 x18 pitch four blade props and most of the inboards run in the 50's unless they have had some serious mods,it 's pretty hard on the bottom of your feet to barefoot at 70mph. :D I, agree the Malibu is probablly the most popular ski boat at least in Texass.

Re: OMG!! a ski boat passed me at 70mph

A couple of years ago I was cruising along at about 60mph in calm water and had one of those high deck fishing boats with one of those BIG outboards walk past me. So, I sped up along side of him and clocked him on the GPS at about 69mph. I have always known they were fast boats with that set-up, but I guess I had to experience it for myself. I was really impressed with how fast it was.

Not to change the subject but watch out for tri-toons with big power. Nothing like a pontoon boat giving you a run for the money.
