Mercury 1000SC
Does any one have any information on these motors? How they would work for a pleasure boat? How much to maintain? Specifications? Anything else?
|
Re: Mercury 1000SC
Are the 900sc just detuned 1000sc? Lower boost, timing retarded, pump gas vs. race gas.
|
Re: Mercury 1000SC
572 cid tall deck (4.5" X 4.5"), supercharged, twin dominator, solid lifter. A popular combination for big motors, but probably not the most practical for a recreational boater. I dont think Merc has made them in 6 or 7 years.
The 900s are a 540 cid (4.375" X 4.44") tall deck. |
Re: Mercury 1000SC
Great motors...just don't let your wallet be shy. There is a potential for carpal tunnel syndrome...reachin' fo' that wallet :drink:

Re: Mercury 1000SC
Thanks for the info.

Re: Mercury 1000SC
The merc 1000sc i have seen is a 540 with brodix heads roller cam 1071 twin doms. You can take out the 700 lift roller and put something smaller. You can change boost from 12 to 7.5 lbs. They idle rough with the two circuit carbs.
|
Re: Mercury 1000SC
How reliable were the merc 1000's? does anyone have a spec sheet on them as well?
|
Re: Mercury 1000SC
If you take out the [race] cam and high pressure valve springs to a less aggressive set up these motors are reliable at 7 lbs. of boost for pleasure apps.
What specs do you need? |
Re: Mercury 1000SC
I did lots of research on all merc blower engines before I built mine, this is what I remember:
1000sc 540cuin big chief heads big root with twin dominator 714 lift solid roller 900sc is a detuned 1000sc brodix heads, smaller solid roller same blower and carbs 800sc 572 low compression gm heads B&M blower twin 700's flat tappet cam 600sc same parts as 800 except built from a 502 hope this helps |
Re: Mercury 1000SC
The 1000 sc has brodix chevy style heads.

Re: Mercury 1000SC
Roger/Quietstorm,
I don't think it's very funny that you go around terrorizing the offshore community and neighborhood like that! I mean, I know this is Halloween, but man Roger, you scare me almost as bad as I scare my own darn self! Listen, you do NOT want anything to do with a solid roller cam! They're demonicly possesed. That stuff is EVIL---trust me! Springs and lifters are destined for hell on those things where Freddie Kruger, and that Elm Street Mightmare dude hang out! If you run across a deal on some Merc 1000hp engines---fine, but have those solid rollers exercised right out of those engines and BURN THEM!!! Don't even keep them in your house! Instead, install hydraulic roller cams and the springs to match, yes you will lose some power, but you will lose major headaches and retain A LOT of $$$ along with it just from the reliability factor alone!!! You want RELIABLE, turn-key power in that boat of yours brother. ;) Just trying to make you laugh a little brother, but serioulsy---don't even think of solid rollers! You've been through enough crap for 5 of us already! |
Re: Mercury 1000SC
Does the 800SC have flat or roller lifters???
|
Re: Mercury 1000SC
Kaama
I believe you are right about the solid roller cam. The ones in my 575 SCi's have been tormenting me for some time now. They are going to have hydraulic cams installed with this rebuild. Maybe the demon will leave the boat after this but he has been a pain in the ass. I'm interested in the boat White Lightening and it has 1000 SC motors in it. I just wanted to get some information before I jumped in another deep hole. I understand the motors have been detuned to run on pump gas but I don't know how much work was done to them. The motors in the Sonic are getting a major overhaul and it would be a shame to let it go before I get a chance to enjoy it for a season but that demon has really pissed me off. |

That is a cool boat. I looked at it one day at the Aqua Toy Store. Then, this past weekend we were riding by Shooters and it was on a lift. It could have been someone that worked at the Aqua Toy Store though. LS JR. |
Re: Mercury 1000SC
A salesman told me it was on a lift at the Aqua Toy Store owners home. After the boat show he said he would send me some pictures.
Everyone thinks its a great boat but its been for sale for a long time. One of a kind and too much power, I guess. He wasn't too interested in trading either. |

Re: Mercury 1000SC
LS JR.
After I reread that too much power, I should have said that kind of power with things that like to break. I'm sure the motors can be made much more reliable without giving up too much HP. I like that and I know many guys that can do it. And #6's I thought about the one of a kind thing and being stuck with it. At this point in my life, only one more boat may be enough. Look how long the Apaches last. I checked on insurance and that's OK. My home port is easy to get in and out so the staggered drives are OK. Even the cabin being empty is OK. I would like to design a cabin layout. My wife has some ideas how that should be too. I just need to get down there and see it. I'm trying to manage a look when we are down for the races next month. Did you notice any cracks or other problems when you saw it? Roger |
Re: Mercury 1000SC
Do it Roger. That is a super cool boat. Because it's a one off, you'll get a deal like never again. It would almost be worth it just to part the boat out. The engines could be detuned by changing to a hyd. roller cam, lighter valve springs, lower the boost to about 7 lbs ( it's a low compression engine). Talk to a carb expert at that point because the carbs will need to be reworked to match the new set-up. There's no reason an engine like that won't run for hundreds of hours if you don't beat on it.

Re: Mercury 1000SC
Sutphen30-Good question. My parts list and Mercruiserparts website both show cam p/n as 491-818870. Service Manual only shows lift as .5593. Srings are 360# open and 130# on the seat @ 1.88". Mine were rebuilt by Sterling. I plan to call them to see if they changed the cam to a hydraulic roller.

Re: Mercury 1000SC
At the risk of beating this thing to death, is a 1000SC a 540 or 572?

540

JCPERF- Thanks for clearing this up. Lou

Re: Mercury 1000SC
I saw this boat when it was new in in FT Lauderdale. It was at the old Ft. Apache marina. Got to check out the rigging in detail. It appered to be show quality and aircraft grade. The original owner spared no expense. I think with engine detune and a cabin installed it would be a great boat.
