Good Oil Pressure ...

Went with a buddy yesterday to look at a 292 Formula with 454's and supposely Port Motor was just rebuilt and Starboard motor last year. Motors ran ok but I noticed even at 4000rpm the Oil pressure was only about 25 lbs and not really rock steady and at idle would drop to about 20lbs ... ....I know my 311 runs 60lbs underway ....I think these motors are very tired .... opinions?

I would cut the filter open and look for debris. Verify that the pressure indicating system is functioning properly.

I would not feel comfortable with that oil pressure. Oil is fresh?

Re: Good Oil Pressure ...

10lbs per 1000 rpms. 4000 should yield 40lbs min.
But on a brighter note...I had one that would start ot 50 lbs , run for a while it would drop to 25/30...slow to an idle and it wouldn't change. Turned out to be a bad sender :D If the o/p was bad it should have dropped more when retuning to idle.

Re: Good Oil Pressure ...

Before i worried about anything i'd screw a mechanical gauge in sender port and measure actual oil pressure,Smitty
