BI Drive stuck on bell housing
 

My 1998 B1 drive is stuck on the bell housing. All the nuts are off. The purpose was to pull the motors, so I slid the motor off of the driveshaft from the inside and got the motor out. Lifting on the drive, i.e. trimming it out, from the outside of the boat you can see the shaft moving inside the gimbal bearing. No signs of corrosion from the inside at least. Any ideas on what is wrong and how to get this drive off???? We pounded/beat/pried etc. with no luck. Any input would be appreciated.

Usually stuck on gimbal brg. Bearing sometimes will come out with drive. not easy to get out though.

put 2 nuts on just a little (no washers).

Preload the drive heavily with a couple of prybars.
Make SURE the prop is off the shaft (for safety) and have somebody crank the motor with the kill switch OFF.

Will pop loose right away.

OK, took wedges and screwdrivers and drove them in and got the drive off. The drive was stuck on the studs with corrosion products I guess. The gimbal bearing and drive shaft was fine. No water in the boot. Would never seize keep this from happening again?? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Not really.

Nevr Seize will HELP but it sounds as if you had the paint film broken inside the bores of the stud holes and they corroded. I would get a round wire brush and clean out the bores real well and prime and paint the holymoly out of the holes. Then use normal grade silicone heavily in the holes and on the studs. JUST WIPE THE SILICONE OFF THE THREADS BEFORE PUTTING THE NUTS ON - USE a/s ON THE NUTS.

Silicone, unless it is dielectric paste, promotes corrosion. Grease works very well. Alot of yards grease the studs slightly. Drive must be removed at least every other season, but better off servicing every season. My 2 cents. BBB

I kinda like to use spline grease. It's really tacky and you should have it right there cause you are using it when you reinstall the outdrive anyhow. --- Jer

NEVER NEVER EVER use neversieze on marine aplications, it has copper in it and will react and make it worse, use mercury 101 works great

Permatex makes an anti sieze that doesn't have any copper in it, you need to look at the ingredients, I agree though that you should never use a copper based anti sieze on anything that is near aluminum.
