Hydraulic trim pump

I am getting water in my trim pump and dont know where its comming from, I have overhauled the rams and have replace the end cap on the second time. I have drop the hydraulic hose manifold and run the pump to check for leaks no leaks, I have check where the pump is mounted and water cant get to it. is there something I am missing. (Bravo III drive) Is there aftermarket rams that I can purchase.

Re: Hydraulic trim pump

I have water in my trim oil as well but I can see a "very" slight" weeping by the trim seals (by the ram). I have them apart now and am searching for the seal kits through seal manufactures because I have a Volvo Penta and in their great wisdom do not sell the piece parts........just the whole ram for like 350. Ouch. Are the shafts surfaces nice on both yours? I would suspect that interface first , as it go under a vacuum when ram is collapsed.

On my old Scarab I had the same problem an it was coming from the fil cap. water was driping on it from the hatch cover drip rail and when I washed the engine compartment also. Its hard to belive it getting in by that little hole but it did.

this is what it was in my case.

Yeah. The cap is a bad source of water.
Also, you gotta make sure you get ALL the water out before you refill else it just seems to keep coming in.

And a switch from motor oil to a tractor hydraulic oil will help keep things from getting killed by the water. Tractor hydraulic fluid will absorb a buncha water.

I thought you had to run ATF in the trim system? Is tractor oil? (I assume the tractor PTO gear oil) is OK?

Re: Hydraulic trim pump

not gear oil.
Tractor Hydraulic (Hy-Tran, etc)

On my Hustler it has NOT gotten any in them and I have sprayed them pretty good with water before . The scarab it was dripping on it.

The Hustler has atf in them and a trim tab pump is leaking . I bought the caps from trick marine Fred thinking it might be coming from the cap . I am also going to buy a new reservoir for it while I have the motors are out .

I wonder it the boat came with atf in them??

I hate oil in the bilge!!!

My Out drive oil reservoir's are leaking also  ,Need a new style??

Re: Hydraulic trim pump

My Formula came with red atf in the tab pumps and 30 wt in the drive pumps.

Bottom line is they will work with oil, atf, piss, water, or whiskey in them.
Oil or atf or hydraulic fluid, though, will keep them working far longer than piss, water, or whiskey.
