You aren't the only one LOL :D I'm still scratching my head. Only thing is, the Searay isn't all that little especially when you look at weight. She outweighs or at matches weight with a lot of go-fasts up to the 28'-29' range. So, while that motor might make one boat really fast, mine won't be 'that" fast, unless you consider it's technicly a "Deck boat" that has the aerodynamics of a brick that weights close to 6k on the water! :D

Re: 454/310 motor replacement options

Well, here is the story of the first race with the new power...

Bob and I launched the boat after the new power was setup, to check everything out. There were a few minor issues that we took care of on the water.

We were then cruising along at about 50 watching the gauges, when a Baja came blowing by us. I don't remember the size of it, but it was bigger than my Donzi 22ZX, and it sounded good.

I looked at Bob, and said, "What do you think?"
He said, "Why not! We need to see if she'll run!"

So, I hopped his wake and blew by him!! He let off after a while...

That was fun! We hit 74.7 on that first run. Bob had his GPS along...

You will be blown away at the difference, once you get more power in there!! I'm almost 14mph faster now! I think there's a few more mph buried in there with props, etc...

Your hammer should see a huge gain, too! You're boat is also lighter.

Take care,
Kent

Re: 454/310 motor replacement options

14mph faster with that motor, thats incredable. Did you switch props from the one you were using with the 454. I have a mirage plus 23p on my baja. I have tried a 25p but the 454 is to weak to turn it at a high rpm. Your succes w/ the swap is friggen awsome. I cant wait to do mine.

Haven't forgot about ya David.! i'll get some pic's taken this weekend hopefully, and get them sent out to ya monday. I'm going through some new truck BS if you read my 'gm tech duramax' thread that's taking my time. This motor will make your boat fly.!

Re: 454/310 motor replacement options

Sounds good Sean. I am ready when you are. Send me those pics. Is that truck thread on this board?

Re: 454/310 motor replacement options

Hi David:
Yes I switched props.
I was running a 24p Bravo with the 7.4MPI. The boat came with a Mirage Plus 23p.
The Bravo lost about 100rpm from the Mirage, and I lost about 1mph on the top, but this boat handles much better with a Bravo.

I have heard that hammer's like Mirage props better than Bravo's.

I am running a stock 28p Bravo now, mid 76's at 5,000rpm.

You might want to try a 27p or 29p Mirage Plus with your new power...

Please keep us posted!!

I've got a labbed 27 Mirage Plus that would be about perfect on your boat David.

That is exciting that your engine is underway!! I hope someone at FTM is taking pictures during the build for you, if you can't make it down...

Weight is one thing, POWER is another. It's pretty easy to push a brick pretty fast, if you have power!! You WILL have power, and PLENTY of it! The parts I saw for your engine belong in a museum.

I can't wait to hear about your stories when you pull away from some 'go fast' boats, in your SEARAY!!! You will have one heck of a sleeper!

Take care,
Kent

Oops, just got that!

I believe that Bob and crew really like to work when his customers or people like me are not around, I would think.

I love to talk boats. So does Bob. So, I cost him more while around than when not, I think...

So, I try to leave him alone. If you come down though, it would be fun to talk boats and go to have food somewhere!

Kent, I am only 30 to 45min from austin. Do you live on Lake Travis, I would love to take a ride in your Donzi. My house is right on the water, I just lower the boat and I am off.

:evilb: LOL, ya, I was just kidding! I'm not sure when I'll be coming down to pick her up but I'll let you know. It could be a quick turn around trip or maybe a weekend trip, who knows.

Re: 454/310 motor replacement options

David, yes, I live on Lake Travis on Bee Creek cove, and my boats are on the dock as we speak, but the dock right now is a few hundred feet offshore since the floods. The lake is dropping, so I hope to be able to get to it over the next few days.

You are welcome to stop by, when the lake is more normal. We can go for a ride! But, I don't really like to boat if it's too cold....

SRJim, please let me know when you come to get your boat!!

So, David, are you going to buy that HP500 for your boat????

It would make a nice Christmas present for your boat!!

David Haag 12-07-2004 09:31 PM

Re: 454/310 motor replacement options

Yes, I am working the deal right now w/Madmax. Soon I will be able to say HAMMER w/HP500. Kent, Did you use your 454 fuel pump( mech ) on your hp500?

Mudball 12-08-2004 10:56 AM

Re: 454/310 motor replacement options

No. My old engine was injected.

My HP500 is carburated and came with a fuel pump mounted on the seawater pump.

If the HP500 you are getting is injected, that's a whole other animal. I don't know how the pumps are setup on those, but if it's anything like my old 7.4MPI, the pump will already be on the engine somewhere...Just hook up the fuel line and go...

Kent

David Haag 12-08-2004 04:56 PM

Re: 454/310 motor replacement options

No, its a carbed hp500. The fuel pump and sea water pump are driven off the same belt. I was just making sure you did not have to go to an electric fuel pump.

I spoke with Bob yesterday, and he mentioned you! It sounds like you are getting ready for some serious fun! I heard about the deal you might be getting. I sure wish I were you. I paid a lot more for mine, but after I was done, it came out OK.
Here's a picture of mine when it was ready to drop in...
There are reasons that this looks a little different than a standard HP500 carb...

Re: 454/310 motor replacement options

I need to call Bob, I already sent MadMax the money for the motor. I will have him ship it to full throttle. I just bought a ZO6 vette yesterday but the car is in st louis. I will be picking it up on christmas eve. Then back to san antonio on christmas day. I will probably have my boat and motor w/bob early january. Whats strange about that pic?

It's also the first time I've seen a full picture of a motor that's black, with the top end blue. Hmmmm........Now I'm thinking again. LOL :D

Re: 454/310 motor replacement options

The hp500 I am buying is black with blue valve covers and intake/carb also. Those pulleys are nice!!
