raise x dimension????
ok stupid question, read of alot of people talking of raiseing the x dimension on there boat. how is this done? wouldnt there be alot of extra holes in the back of the boat? some say that it is cheap mph on some older boats, new drives or adjustable extension boxes or both doesnt seem cheap though?
i want a 1.5" to match what the new 36 outlaw's are rigged now. do i hack saw of the back end and add some bondo? thanks |
Re: raise x dimension????
Easiest way is to install an IMCO shorty lower unit with Max Machine inards. They come in 1,2 or 3" shorties for the bravo.
|
Re: raise x dimension????
thats what i am doing on a 99 36ft outlaw imco 2 inch shorties !!!!!!
we will see what happens. |
Re: raise x dimension????
you never know till you try it. the two inch shorties are the way to go it is probably too high but you can space them down with spacers so you are better off to start high thats how we rigged the race boat then we test with different spacers

Re: raise x dimension????
Why Do You Think That Is Too High? If Baja Raised The X 1.5 Inches Already
And I Think The X Is Still To Low!!!!!!!! |
Re: raise x dimension????
As long as you are running a Bravo all the above comments are good ones. Is your drive a Bravo? Otherwise we need more info. --- JP

Re: raise x dimension????
where do you find imco shorty lowers, yes bravo 1 1999. is that just the bottom of the drive? thats for the answers>

Re: raise x dimension????
Yes that is the bottom of the drive but it's not cheap

Re: raise x dimension????
ok you are right I just popped off about the being too high maybe it could be higher yet?
but going up 2 inches is alot ( we change it 1/4" at a time) and see big differences, you must be prepared to do alot of testing and should but at least 1/2 " spacers to start , with the higher x you may need to try props with more blades than you are currently running , as you lift the drive the slippage will go through the roof you can go to 5 or 6 blades and bring it back in line also your handling will dimminish( the boat will feel looser) , as in most things there are tradeoffs handling vs speed , that aside if you are carefull testing as you raise the x you will see a speed increase till a point than you will lift it 1/4" and gain rpm but no more speed than go back down 1/4 and you are there also somewhere in there you will not be able to turn( maybe in a pleasure boat you can tolerate more of that since you can just slow down ie. you don't have to push the boat that hard in a turn) just as you start down this road remember for each setting of the drive you should try different props, try switching the rotation of drives in or out, and remember to keep the boat weight the same so you don't get false results hope this helps larry svl #5 wild ride 2004 world champions |
Re: raise x dimension????
larryd, wow did not relize that 1/4" could make that much diff. does each boat (same make same model) end up with a slightly different optimal x dimension?
all i know is i have a buddy with a newer 36 outlaw higher x 496's runs 4 blades nonlabbed, me 1999 with lower x 500 hps running labbed 3 blades ( cant run 4 blades) and we are pretty close to dead even. i have him by .2-.3 mph on gps ( and that could be a big gust of wind) we run neck and neck. that frustrates me. |
Re: raise x dimension????
I am going to try to put the shorties on this week and try it but it's a bit cold out there
so i will see what i can do.want to try them before i pull the motors!!!!!!!! and larry i didn't mean anything when i said too high!!!!!!!!!! |
Re: raise x dimension????
i will send you a coat. :D
|
Re: raise x dimension????
why can't you run 4 blades? i do hydro's 26 pitch with hp500's at 74.8 gps
|
Re: raise x dimension????
i would go 5 blades w/ the raised x and then test, test, test.....
|
Re: raise x dimension????
could not turn them, the threes just worked better. are you running salt? efi or carb?
|
Re: raise x dimension????
salt water and yes carb!!!
|
Re: raise x dimension????
yes each hull can be slightly different , but if the didn't change the bottom between yours and your buddy's they should be real close so you are right you should be very close to his x boat manufactures tend to be real conservative in thier x dimensions so you can definately go higher then they do and you can always space them back down , thy fact that you are using 3 blades does lead me to think your drives are too deep , unfortunately you just have try it good luck if you get them up you may not be able to get on plane with 3 blades
|
Re: raise x dimension????
yz, how fast are you running now ?
I'm going to assume low 70's. I have heard from more than 1 person that the 496ho's ( performance wise) run pretty close to the carbed Hp500's. I don't know if that makes you feel any better though  Even though I love to spend other peoples money, baja 36ft has offered to be the "guinea pig", his results should be very compareable to what you should see. jt |
Re: raise x dimension????
i run right at 70, last year the gods must have been right and i ran 73 once. make that 69.9 not 70. I would love 74.8. heck i would take 73 again. i hope that baja 36ft sees an improvement.
