Question about a merc to volvo marine engine swap
One of my buddies has found a volvo 5.7 350 motor for me which will be replacing a merc 260 engine. The volvo will be mated to an alpha ss drive. Aside from the coupler and wire harness what else do i need to be aware of when doing the swap? My concerns are the existing merc motor mounts, fuel line hookup, and control cables. Will they match up to the old merc setup?
Also, since the alpha ss has the water pump in the drive for the merc 260 setup, will I need to do anything regarding the water pump cause I believe the volvo has a water pump that is engine mounted? Thanks, Jim |
Re: Question about a merc to volvo marine engine swap
sorry one more question, Can I use the coupler and fly wheel housing from the merc 260 on the volvo? Or will new ones be required? thanx again

Re: Question about a merc to volvo marine engine swap
Upon spending the day researching the database of OSO's tech Q and A.... I have found that the coupler, bell housing and harness will need to be replaced.
Any help on whether the fuel line connection, shift/throttle cable connections, motor mounts, and water pump are going to be an issue? I know we have some volvo knowledgeable folks on this board, can someone help a brotha out? Thanks Jim |
Re: Question about a merc to volvo marine engine swap
The stuff from your old Merc 260 should fight right on. The thing you might want to check is the age of the engines. GM started changing stuff in '85 to '87. There is a sight called mortec or motortech, or something like that. You can look up the casting #'s on the respective blocks and tell what year they are and from there figure what fits. Flywheels, starters and couplers and oilpans will not interchange from these years. (firsthand knowledge there) Good Luck
