Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
Which replacement system should I choose for my totally stock 1996 502 Magnum MPI GenVI with Mercruiser's Silent Choice system which I want to keep in a 22 Donzi Classic in fresh water with stock Bravo 1 drive and 25" MiragePlus prop.
Both kits supposedly come with all necessary brackets and in "Silent Choice" versions. My priorites/concerns are ease of installation, performance, reliability. I have heard the installation of the Gil Magnum Choice system requires some work to get it to fit. Any comments greatly appreciated. Thanks SL |
Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
i've seen alot of problems with the Gils. Stainless Marine is a quality product with great service and factory support.
Contact Too Old for the best price. |
Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
Ive been using and have installed Gils for years. Never had a problem and they work well. Cant compare them to the SM since Ive never used them.
|
Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
Based on what I have seen over the years I would prefer the Stainless Marine exhaust system over the GIL's.

Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
stainless marine all the way !!

Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
Stainless. Had a set of gils fail.

Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
I have a '93 Baja Islander that I put a 95 502 EFI in. It had Corsa silent choice with the stock 7.4 when I got the rig. After I had it all up and running with the 502 and stock cast iron exhaust manifolds I put a used set of Gil mags in and no problems for 2 seasons. Have fun. ttfn

Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
Have you checked into the revolution marine exhaust? I'm pretty sure they make a set for silent choice.

Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
Stainless Marine makes more power than any... Tested them all in the dyno, the Gen 3 made 30 horses more than the CMI in a 540. Stainless Marine has allot of years of expertise.

Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
I have installed 9 sets of Stainless Marine exhaust on both 502 and 454 engines with no major problems. I did elect to use a better set of gaskets then were supplied by Stainless Marine.

Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
Can the gen3 SM be installed with silent choice? Would need a short elbow section.

wildcard,
I have two sets of Stainless on the new boat I purchased and they leak. The headers are new, but the pipes are not. I took the rope gasget off yesterday to see if its the problem but have no clue. The clamps were tight. Should the rope gasget be completly round? Mine is cut. Do they come this way? Any ideas...enclosed is a pic of were it leaks on all four joints. Leaks very little. Would high temp silcone work? thanks. |
Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
He Pismo10,
I have a pair of Stainless Marine exhaust and they work great with my Corsa system. I have had to replace the inside flap on one but this is after 3 years no othr problems.. Good Luck...... |
Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
YEah, your right...Might be a mismatch...The gasket is not round, should it be? it was cut.

Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
H iPerf 2000,
How was the install? any problems, did the brackets fit and work well? Any reworking anything, like trimming that 4" rubber hose or did it just slip on? Thanks, that is my exact setup in your picture, only one engine tho. SL |
Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
Have Gills on mine... a friend has same engines/same boat. In his boat with Stainless marine exhaust it's quieter. Mine sound better & are louder ( if you care about sound ) both at idle & especially underway at cruise & full throttle.
Have had zero problems with my Gills. His stainless are newer than my Gills & several studs have broken off at/in the riser. He has had to replace several. I know several other guys whom have years & years on Gills without any issues, but you have to be anal about flushing.....thats one of the major keys to longevity in the marine enviornment. |

Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
Too Pld,
So what the catalog say ? Do ytou sell them ? and so you also sell a good exhaust gaskets (4) for those CMI's? thanks. |

Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
I have one set of gil's for sale from my hp500 with quick& quit and tall risers

Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
I replaced a set of Gils with Imcos. Both came in and out really easy. I replaced the Gils because they failed. Given time, the Imcos will fail too. I think it's a design thing. Try to find a riser that will allow you to drain it completely. Some (with the "bypass" hose) let stale, salt water sit between the manifold and the riser. Install any gaskets so the fluids can flow freely, as in the stock Merc. risers. I think CMI has addressed this issue.

Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
I put revolution marine exhaust on my Fountain. Price was right. About
a thousand a side 1/2 the price of Gil. So far they work great ( 1 Season) Kind of a Biotch to install, but a 32 Fountain is pretty tight in the engine bay. Mine also has silent choice. |
Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
I have been running Stainless Marine for about 15 years now on my 30' Velocity with no troubles ! The manufacturer told me if they ever did leak it would be on the outside, not into a motor! Good Luck ! Ron, OPA P-4 33 STEELINTIME !

Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
Running SM on mine with 0 problems. Frankly they are buttet proof. The single clamp from the manifold to the riser is great for removing...no battling 4 bolts. The only gaskets required are the manifold to heads. I commonly remove mive if I need to work on something low in the back (starter, bildge etc.)

Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
The SM GEN 3 are hard to keep from leaking fumes with long transmission, thru transom pipes. They also require 37-38 inch centers in side by side installations. They do make great power with big cubes or blowers and would probably be a good choice for a single engine boat with tips and rubber hose.

Re: Stainless Marine or Gil Exhaust
Good deal fred! Now I just gotta get the engine ready for them.
Will post pics in the owners forum! |
