Plus it filters the air, can't hurt.

This is just a fancy, very expencive, filter, which does nothing other than keep dirt out of the motor. No gains what so ever in proformence.

A modified chip with it helps

Live Wire - I have to disagree with you.
Do you have Dyno charts to prove your claims? K&N has well documented proof that their filters increase HP over stock filters. Just visit their website www.knfilters.com and see the Dyno charts. I know for a fact that their filters for my YZF600 gave me a 3 HP improvement because I was there when we Dyno'd my bike on Eraldo Ferracci's dyno in Willow Grove, Pa. - jeff [ 01-20-2002: Message edited by: JeffreyBoy ] |
JEFF BEFORE I PUT K&N'S ON I WOULD ONLY RUN 4150 RPM, NOW IT'LL GO UP TO APROX 4375. NOT A LOT OF SPEED DIFFERENCE, THAT'S HARD TO TELL BUT IT DOES BREATH BETTER!

troy....
YOUR ENGINES ONLY RUN UP TO 4,300 rpm ???????  I hope that's not the case... they should be running right at 5,100 rpm.. if they're not you've got an engine or big prop problemo... [ 01-21-2002: Message edited by: JeffreyBoy ] |
Jefferyboy, 3hp differance, eather way, on a 425hp motor doesn't do much. So if I did get a 2 or 3hp increase, I sure didn't feel it. And sure don't feel that the money spent on that small of a change is worth it. I've put this filter on 2 motors that I've had, with no noticable change. BUT, I do like to have a filter, not just some wire mesh, to keep the dirt out of my motor.

Jeff's talking about 3hp on an 85hp bike motor, not a BBC motor.

JEFF, I'VE GOT BIGGER PROPS, NO PROBLEM THOUGH, ALMOST 78 MPH FROM 310 HP 454'S!

I can tell you guys that on a stock EFI motor you're not going to notice anything without doing other mods in conjunction. I ran my boat once with no arrestor on there at all with the engine hatch lifted a crack and there was NO DIFFERENCE. It's all got to do with the weakest link theory. Sure, the K&N will allow a significantly greater amount of air to flow than stock arrestor, but to no avail without opening up the rest of the motor(exhaust, intake, ports, etc).
It's like putting a double-diameter garden hose on the side of your house---Without a bigger nozzle and spigget, no more flow. It's only going to make differences when you do the aforementioned mods along with it. Believe me, some engineer sat there for hours calculating the mass flow rates of air entering that stock engine and designed the flame arrestor specifically for it...And as always, there's always safety factors involve....Meaning it's already flowing 1.5-2.0 times what's required. :) [ 01-23-2002: Message edited by: Baja Daze ] |
