Exhaust Dilema
1 Attachment(s)
I have CMI e-tops going in their after everything is put back together.
The original exhaust had 4" tails. The CMI that's going in now has 4 1/2" tails on the OD. I would like to use a switchable muffler such as a Teague ST-450 The problem that I see is that the center holes have only 3/4" of space between them. With the 4" outlets the beauty rings were ground flat where they meet in the center. Will a switchable exhaust fit? If not can an exhaust muffler tip be used and what brand? Or do I have to have CMI modify the tails to exit through the transom and then use a muffler insert? |
Re: Exhaust Dilema
My brother and I tried 2 sets of those mufflers, they burnt up the first season. 1000 dollar exhaust tips.

Re: Exhaust Dilema
Dennis, I have the same problem with my Fountain. I had GGB make up a set of Extremes that fit together in that space. I can set you up with the same thing if you're interested. They're going to cost a bit more but they make a damn nice muffler. They come with a warranty and they stand behind there product.
And Fred's right, CLEAN THAT BILGE!!! Finn |
Re: Exhaust Dilema
Boy you guys are picky...
It was pressure washed clean when I started... :p After it's gel painted if I don't like it I may have to finish it out with awlgrip. Lofty: I've been looking at the GGB's Tell me more about the GGB tips. What did they do to make them fit? Do you have a pic? |

Re: Exhaust Dilema
This can be fixed. Re-cut the holes with a 5" hole saw to allow for sufficient muffler clearance. The believe the CMI Aft-Fires are 6" in diameter. The 4.5" tail pipes can be offset/modified by CMI. The new 4.5" beauty rings will cover the boo-boo...it's only money.

Re: Exhaust Dilema
Dennis, The outside looks nice :D
I'll go take some pics tomorrow. The parts are all down at the riggers. The GGB's are the way to go. I've been running them on mine and have many customers with them. Everyone seems to be pretty happy and haven't had any problems with them blowing out. |
Re: Exhaust Dilema
I don't like clamp on silencers. They all look funny and, let's face it, they can fall off!

Re: Exhaust Dilema
My tail pipes are thru the transom. The CMI mufflers are clamp-on. Each muffler has a thru-bolt that eliminates any chance of blow off. My tails pipes were dry, but I drilled 5 small holes the the top of each inner pipe to add exit water to cool the mufflers. It is a clean looking set up. These air actuated mufflers really take the edge off around the docks/marina. I will try and post a picture on Monday.

Strikin,
These are the CMI Aft-Fires. My tails are 5" OD and the engines are on a 34.5" centerline. |
Re: Exhaust Dilema
Looks Clean Ben,
The set of CMI's have not been fit as the engines are out for upgrade :D The exhaust is for a staggered 42 Fountain and that's all I know for now. If the tails don't exit close to the existing holes in the transom I have a few choices. CMI can replace the short tail and redirect the long tail $$$$$$$$$$$$ Also CMI can reduce down to 4" but I'd like to keep the larger OD. Or I can have new holes cut out to fit tails and the old holes sealed shut. I have a very good glass shop but is that a problem retaining the strength of the transom? I know I've read of board members doing this but I don't know how it works out in the long run. Any way I look at it I'm going to have to put some sort of silencers on the exhaust. Dennis |
Re: Exhaust Dilema
Dennis,
I would leave the system dry with the tails thru the transom. This way you don't have a concern about reversion. This will also eliminate the cost of the F/G work. Add up all the cost and benefits and pick your poison. Maybe CMI would work with you if you on the tail pipe mods if bought two new sets of mufflers. Sprague |
