carb set up on a 540
You guys that are running 600 hp 540,s, how is your carb set up and what sizes are you using ? Jet sizes air bleeds.? (632 lift cam for me, any suggestions for jetting )

Re: carb set up on a 540
I had Nickerson build me an HP Dominator for my new 540. It worked perfectly on the dyno. I haven't tried it on the water yet.

Re: carb set up on a 540
How was it Jetted ?

Re: carb set up on a 540
I use 1050 model no. 8082-1 on 540's. Jets are 92 pri., 94 sec. 6.5 power valve. Ran very smoothly with Merin heads and the cam you're using.

Re: carb set up on a 540
It has 94 all around with a 4.5 power valve. They did a bunch of tricks to the air bleeds and mixture circuits. I don't know how that would effect jetting.

Re: carb set up on a 540
Just send it to Dean and be done with it. I am very happy with the performance of his carbs on my motors.

Re: carb set up on a 540
I run a 950 with jetting 80/82 and 4.5 p valves.Always wanted a dominator but was told that would hurt the torque #.The 950 was from the last mota so the carb was free.Dynoed at 630hp@5700 and [email protected]g iron GM head.Would a dom make a big difference?

Re: carb set up on a 540
I would agree with RLW as long as you know EVERYTHING about your engine build to tell Dean and have all those Christmas bills paid. Otherwise there are things you can try yourself. Asking for input from others here isn't all that bad unless you go too lean and cook something. I'm running 89's all round with no lean-out and a clean transom. --- JP

Re: carb set up on a 540
I'm going by memory here so don't quote me but, a friend of mine had a pair of 540's with solid roller cams and Wilson Intakes. HP numbers were around 667hp. He ran stock Holley "marine" 1050's and had to jet it all the way to 99 all 4 corners. This was on the Dyno.

A dominator might give you more hp on top. I had 540's and used the Holley hp950cfm carb. Many thought I should have used the 1050 Dom, but I didn't really feel it was necessary. Actually, I used an hp830 carb, but picked up about 16 more hp from the 950. I now have 565cid engines and will still use the 950's I have. I believe they will give much better throttle response and I will take that any day over more HP. |
Re: carb set up on a 540
Patriyacht, I'm really surprised you can use a 6.5 power valve. I would have expected you to be using 4.5 or 3.5 pv's.

Re: carb set up on a 540
I was preparing to change it to a 4.5 just before my season ended. I ran a 6.5 for a year with the Merlin heads. It idled at 800 and never tried to die when shifting. After switching to the AFR's, I had to open the idle bleeds to about 2.5 turns to get enough fuel to idle. No carb signal I guess. As soon as I cracked the throttle the engines would fall on their faces however.

Re: carb set up on a 540
How long does it take Nickerson to do his magic ?
|
Re: carb set up on a 540
Now is a good time to send your carb to Dean. Might take a week. If you wait until spring like everyone else, maybe 3 weeks.

Re: carb set up on a 540
used a stock 830 ,88 front,93 rear,cant remember the powervalve

Re: carb set up on a 540
I have a pair of 540's with GM ported iron heads, 9.75 to 1 CR, and a big cam. Nickerson did the dominators in about 2 weeks. 92 on all corners. I don't know what power valve he put them. They idle great and very little soot on the transom. Peak HP is around 5800 RMP.
Send them to Dean with as much information about your setup as possible. You will be completely satisfied with their performance. |
Re: carb set up on a 540
I think thats exactly what im going to do . My compression is lower than yours . But thanks for the tip.
