CHRIS CAT Knowledge ?

HELP!!!! I have an 84 CHRIS CAT and i am trying to find out if there is supposed to be hook in the steps. My boat has approximately 3/16" hook from front to back of both steps on both sides. Is this factory???

I would send Mike an email. He was able to help me with some questions I had about my stinger.

Re: CHRIS CAT Knowledge ?

I just looked at mine and there is a little just behind each step but the last four feet of each step seem pretty strait. I was told it had been blueprinted and corners sharpened. Either way it runs so well I'm not going to touch her. Good luck and if you want more info email ([email protected]). Dueclaws may chime in with some additional info as well. :drink:

Re: CHRIS CAT Knowledge ?

Jeffrey-
There was some hook in the 1985 hull that Greencard has and I spent considerable time getting it straighter and the edges sharper. You should concentrate on the last 4 or 5' area before the transom. At speed, the boat should run on the last part of the second step and the part of the last step at the transom.

Re: CHRIS CAT Knowledge ?

Thanks for the info. The boat is the old Tropic Heat d class boat from the early 90s re rigged as a pleasure boat with 509 blower motors and 700 hp per side, and it weighs 10,600# full of fuel. it will run 109 on GPS, does not seem to care if it is empty or full, spinning 16.5" X 33" 4 blade rolla props to about 5900. The C.G. is in the center of the forward step (about 8' forward of the stern) The boat loves snotty white capped go run and hide water and runs FLAT. The boat has approximately 3/16" of hook from the front to the rear of both steps? It was sitting on an under rated Triad trailer when i brought it back from south Florida and it had weird bunks. The boat develops a major hop (Linder lope???) from about 90 up and i am unable to drive through it. Other than that, it is a fantastic boat. My wife and kids love it. It is as solid as a rock and very stable to run. I have to take people for rides to show them that you can cruise at 80 and not get beat up. I am a nut for speed and do air it out by myself with a jacket and a kill switch. My friends are tired of me telling them that it is not how fast you go but how you go fast. Any help or direction you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Jeff

Are your props turning in or out?

What kind of outdrives do you run?

Re: CHRIS CAT Knowledge ?

The props are turning in on Arneson ASD 8 drives. I tried them turning out way way back in the beginning (500 horse 502s) and the boat seemed to be stuck to the water. If i had read the thread on great moments in cat history and the explanation from T2x they would probably still be turning out.

Re: CHRIS CAT Knowledge ?

T2X wouldn't approve, but we turned the #3 speedy props in and it made a positive improvement in high speed handling. You have a different situation with the Arnesons since the props are farther aft of the transom. You might try contacting a good prop company like Throttle Up; sometimes a prop change can help with "hop".

I do not think that throttle up can help me. Big shaft Arneson splines are different than any other. You can have a set made, but i do not have a wallet like many of the OSO crowd.

Re: CHRIS CAT Knowledge ?

Are you certain that these are ASD8 drives? How many splines are on the shaft, 19 or 25? If they are 19 I make a propeller adapter to allow one to put SSM#6 propellers onto a 19 tooth spline shaft.

I know of a Cris Cat with ASD6's on it that was out if MI.

Tschiggfries old Cris Cat with SSM#3 drives porpoised severely, we upped the diameter on the propellers some and it helped some.

Your CG is in the proper space for the boat and you do have a good top speed, how much cup is in the propellers?

Re: CHRIS CAT Knowledge ?

Rik If this is the rick from Arneson, we have spoken before and you helped me with steering parts. These are big shaft (25Tooth) ASD8s #0802BBK60092 & 93. Came through Tim Drake in 95. Put big shafts in from Erol L. in Fla. in 02. I thought you made a set of rocker plates for Rod's old CHRIS CAT?? I do not have a clue how much cup in the props or how to measure??

Re: CHRIS CAT Knowledge ?

I did, the boat was far better he said.

I sold his boat to a guy here is CA, he blew the SSM#3's as soon as he got it. opps.

Re: CHRIS CAT Knowledge ?

Thanks all for the info. I sent an E-mail to George Linder, the man responsible for the CHRIS CAT and he called me. He was not only very friendly but also very helpful. It seems that I am not supposed to have any hook in my steps so it is time to grind and fill.

jeffery Hi ! Just lurking on your thread and have a 10 cent question ! I throttled in a 40 Fountain called Executioner in 90 and I remember Tropic Heat was a bad a$$ boat ! There was another Chris Cat in D called American Express, Jimmy the owner of American Express had his tabs set to where he liked them in all conditions then replaced the trim cylinders with a section of pipe ! Are your tabs fixed or movable ? Thank's Ron OPA P4-33 STEELINTIME , PS. We could only out run those F~#&@ng Cats in really big water !! Good Luck with her !

Steelintime.

I am not sure what you are asking. We do not run tabs, and the drives are tamable asd8s.

jeffery, I guess the pipe I remember was in place of drive cylinders not tabs ! It was a long time ago! Your pictures clear it all up for me. Look's great ! Ron OPA P4-33 STEELINTIME.

It's not finished yet! I just put enough together so I could test the basic setup and rigging before the lakes froze. I need to finish the interior, make new hatches, fix some scratches, etc.

Has any one out there tried a tunnel tab on a CHRIS CAT to help with the hop? If so, did it help? what kind?

Re: CHRIS CAT Knowledge ?

Hot Pursuit (Keith) has one on his Shadow Cat.
Note: he's running #3s (1-1 ratio!).
I seem to recall that he believes it's an asset, but I'm not sure if it's for "hop".
