VALAKO RACE HEADS

Mbam 02-08-2002 07:30 AM

The head guy (no pun intended) is Carl Foltz. His company is CFE. Not sure if he will do cast iron any more, as everything is CNC therse days. As far as I know, he does the heads for Sterling engines. You would have to check around to see how his pricing is, but I have found his work to be well worth it. If interested send me an Email and I will find his number for you.

Advanced Airflow Engineering (586)294-7915
Talk to Ron, he does the cylinder head and
camshaft development for Joey Griffin
(Pier 57) and also does some work for CFE.
CFE is also a good choice but like someone
else said , I don't think he is into iron heads anymore

Here's a question,

Is it more cost-effective to rebuild your heads and adding larger valves and such or just but a complete Dart or Merlin set?

26scarab 02-08-2002 10:05 AM

It all depends on what your trying to do.
If your trying to add a little more HP to your existing combination , keep what you have and port it ,add bigger valves..etc. Providing you have something decent to begin with.
If your building a new combination or what to add major HP then it is better to start new or buy something that has already been ported.
I've got a set of iron oval port Merlins that were originally done by Sterling/CFE , I could never afford that , I ended up buying them used from Advanced Airflow, I also had
Ron due some more work to them and had an intake done. Sure they were a little more
than a out of the box Dart but I guarantee they work better.

kaama82 02-08-2002 01:18 PM

Hey guys thanks, but keep the opinions coming. I guess I should of said what my combination was to begin with. 496 MK 4, Canfield alum. heads 2.25 int 1.88 exh. 310 runners, 9.6 to 1 compression, Lightning stainless steel headers(dry) Hyd. roller, Brodix intake and 830 cfm (too small I think) Thanks...... 26scarab 02-08-2002 03:57 PM

If you want to be fast like Reggie :D

Give Ron a call :Advanced Airflow Engineering

No, he isn't paying me , but I do get great
deals ! Plus I grew up with him.
He has done, Stadium trucks,Winston cup, Trans am , Boats,Drag racing, and Viper/scca stuff.
I would rank him up there with CFE .

Lukavich Racing in Royal Oak MI does some pretty nifty head porting. (248)280-0240
I have a Nickerson stage 5 850 (980 cfm)carb that I had previously run on my 496. It worked great. I have since moved up to a stage 5 1050 and it works even better. I could part with that 850 for around $450 if you are interested. I think its around $895 for a new one. Good luck.

KAAMA 02-11-2002 10:31 PM

Valako Race heads, 616-735-0800 and ask for Jim...he does mostly heads for marine applications from mild to wild and he's reasonably priced. You should check out his web page.

cigarette39 02-11-2002 10:59 PM

KAMMA WHAT IS VALAKO WEB PAGE ADDRESS. THANKS

Tinkerer 02-11-2002 11:19 PM

see my post at the begining of this topic for Jim valakeo

KAAMA 02-12-2002 06:40 AM

Cigarette39, go to Tinkerboater's first post within this thread and then click on "Valako Race Heads" and it will take you to his site. It's actually a home page right now but I think he's having a new professionaly desinged website made up in the near future. I'm sure that some of the other head porting services mentioned on this thread provide a good service as well, however I have personally dealt with Jim Valako and like his work. There are several engine builders in his area that will even admit that when it comes to head porting, Jim can get the most out of a set of heads....and there are A LOT of guys around here who're running his heads.

Tinkerer 02-12-2002 07:45 PM

AMEN TO THAT

turbo2256 02-12-2002 08:29 PM

I just have this to say BHP has a full body camero one of the big ones that turns low 7s in the quarter with a small block and shifts at 4800 rpm .... need I say more?

kaama82 02-12-2002 09:40 PM

Jim, I'll try to get in touch with you again in the next couple of days. I've been extremely busy since I talked to you last. Was wondering if you had a chance to check out Canfield's flow numbers? I did get my motors out. Sounds like "Kaama" is trying to brew up some business for you. kaama82

Liquid Kroozir 02-17-2002 09:39 AM

Jim V. did a set of Dart heads for me this winter . He took alot of time first answering questions then answering more questions never made me feel dumb was reasonably priced and was very nice to work with. I even screwed something up that he did for me ,Icalled him and told him what Ihad done He told me to send the manifold back to him ,He fixed up what I f---ed up , didnt make me feel like moron, Ipersonally am very happy with Jim and BJ and HIGHLY recommend them

Tinkerer 02-17-2002 08:31 PM

YES BUT WHAT TIME DOES THE CAMARO DO IN THE WET 1/4 mile. There is a big difference between a car engine and a boat engine.

turbo2256 02-19-2002 10:15 AM

Ok I give in to you guys with your big ports that flow **** at low rpms and low lift figures. The guy at BHP worked for Batton for years before working with me at Ford and knows his stuff. We build low rpm high torque motors the figures on the camero show it if you cant see that well. The only big drawback to a marine engine is how strong it has to be built compaired to its wheeled counterpart to survive.

Tinkerer 02-19-2002 09:45 PM

Turbo YOU ARE SOOO WRONG you obviously didn't look at JIM's site or you wouldnt make a stupid statement like that. Jim excells in making rec. port heads flow like small port and still outflow the large port heads at higher rpm ALWAYS READ AND DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU TYPE And there are alot more differences between the marine and the auto engines than strength.

turbo2256 02-20-2002 11:10 AM

Bring a set to my shop we will put them on the flow bench if yor right I will eat my words.

Tinkerer 02-20-2002 05:46 PM

I have an easier way why dont you just call Jim yourself and he will tell you the #'s he gets. IN FACT IF YOU JUST LOOK AT HIS WEB SITE YOU WILL SEE AN EXAMPLE OF THE NUMBERS. Lets face it true hp and torque dont lie. How about 638 hp out of a 454 that had unbelievable bottom end - Nat. asp. carb. In order to get the flow you need on the top end you will have to hog out the oval port heads so why not just start with the rec. port heads that have a higher port so that you will have a better entry into the chamber. LOOK AT JIM'S SITE.

26scarab 02-20-2002 07:40 PM

My suggestion is you need to figure out what kind of power you want to make then make a decision on what "airflow technician " you want to use.
Just remember flow numbers don't always tell the whole story. Also make sure that the person you use will also pick the right camshaft for you.
If you want to make serious HP (600+) I know who I would use.

My old 502 with oval port Merlins , Brodix intake and 8.5:1 CR made 625hp @ 5800rpm's
My current 540 has the same heads, and intake with
8.9:1 CR and is making 675hp .
The motors will idle at 600-700 rpm's without loading up and are a pleasure to drive.

If you want to make power go with someone that has done R&D work for a major race team, that way you can see how there product works.

turbo2256 02-21-2002 12:45 PM

Not trying to put your guy down but I have talked to guys claiming high figures aftermarket mfg claiming this and that.
Most of it proved to be BS. The only aftermarket castings that have cosistantly flowed as advertized are Canfield and Brodex. We have gotten competetors heads and flowed them to find they didnt perform as advertized. Some we found to be using adapters that inhanced air flow figures. We just got a set of stage 3 World heads the newest ones factory ported and will be able to post results if any one is interested . Also have results of other factory heads stock and modified. If your interested I will see that you get the info if we have it. SO bring the heads and will check them for you and maybe you will make a believer out of me and get to watch me eat my words too...

KAAMA 02-22-2002 10:11 AM

Cig39....JimV currently only has his advertisments on his "homepage" at this time. You'll have to find a thread that he has posted on and click on one of his icons near his name that will navigate you to his "home page" and there you will find information on his head porting service. He is however, having a web page professionaly desinged for his head porting business as we speak. If you have questions just give him a call...he's very a very easy guy to speak to.

kaama82 02-23-2002 11:06 PM

Let me get this straight, Is anybody out there recommending Canfield heads??????

turbo2256 02-25-2002 01:01 PM

The Canfield heads are great

kaama82 02-25-2002 09:34 PM

I've been happy:) :) so far, just would like a little more power:eek:

turbo2256 02-26-2002 10:14 AM

I think I can get you flow data on the 310 cc ports. Starting with the smaller ports is a good move. I reciently used the Edelbrock oval port heads on my 7.4 carb with mild pocket port work went up three prop sizes with no other modifications I push a prop usually used in a 502 in my boat . With cam and some headers I expect another 60 to 90 HP.

MitchStellin 02-27-2002 11:21 PM

Yes, Jim & BJ do a great job. Jim can "see" air. # above is correct.
