Aluminum or cast iron manifolds
 

I boat in salt water, then in brackish water up the river 5-6 miles going home. My boat is stored on a lift and is always flushed after use. I'm thinking about changing intake manifolds and exhaust also. Which type material would last longer..aluminum or iron? Stainless isn't an option...too expensive for my budget. I'm presently using the stock iron but that **** is so heavy and looking to replace with a slight upgrade. Help.

ALuminum will last forever in salt water AS LONG AS YOU FLUSH!! :D

I have aluminum logs on my 1970 Donzi that are at least 25 years old, and used in salt. I flush as soon as I come out, and they still look great inside. I also use that "Saltaway" stuff every time...

Check on GLH manifolds--they are cast iron but very moderately priced. Great source is http://www.oceaneastmarine.com/ . I've also talked to gu who designed special molds and casting process they use.

Another route to extend life on maifolds is closed cooling, THat way only the risers are at risk if you forget to floss--mean flush.

I've got the GLH stuff on my 454EFI's with closed cooling. Looking good after 3 seasons in hradcore saltwater here on east coast of FL and before that in Gulf near Pensacola.

Bgiz.......is your manifold hard anodidsed or powder coated?

Poorsche......doesnt glm also make aluminum......was thinking they were the way to go

GLM does make an aluminum manifold.
I was underimpression not to mix the alum manifold with cast iron riser.

Iron riser is needed since the exhaust cooling water is salt water at that point ande the salt water would eat up the alum risers.

Mixing the two types of metals would cause electrolysis I think I was told. Anywya--i just went iron all the way.

Poorsche......I think they make the risers of aluminum also. How old are your glms....what engine do you have....last, any performance increase over the iron? Thanks/
