454 manifold suggestions

I would appreciate any suggestions on intake manifolds. It will be for a 454, large rectangular port chevy heads, mild roller cam, Holley carb, MSD ignition and dana exhausts. The max I would spin is 5000-5200 rpm. It's been suggested that I keep the stock but I find it hard to belive that an aftermarket wouldn't give me a little more torque/HP.

Please clear the smoke and break the mirrors! I need to buy one soon.

Pardon my ignorance but who makes the Team G, where is it available and is there a part#

Edelbrock air gap rpm or Victor Jr dart is also a good choice I took off the stock intake and carb on a merc 400 put on victor jr and 830 holley and picked up 3mph thought that was good bang for the buck but the boat already had exhaust on it.

Weiand makes the Team G manifold.

Do you have the stock alum High rise 454 mag intake or the 330hp intake?
I was going thru the same thig this winter. From others that have been there I decided to stay with my 454 Mag intake and use a 1" spacer. A friend with the same setup as me said he changed to a Victor and gained 25 rpm on top, but hurt his midrange.

The stock 454 Mag intake looks an aweful lot like a Weiand Team G dual plane. Although it is a Winters intake the same that was used on the LS6 454 from GM.

Like this Weiand 7535, It doesn't seem to be in the current catalog.

Since you want a mild 454, I would go with an Air Gap RPM. For a higher revving 454, I would use a Wiend Accellerator. Merc used them on the 420 HP with a 1" thick 4 hole spacerand a Holley 800. For an all out 454 that might rev to 6000, I would use the same Dart single plane that is used on the 500 HP.

Edelbrock Air Gap part number 7562 for square ports.

I agree with some of the other guys, I would go with the Edlebrock Air-Gap dual plane intake manifold....especially with it being a 454 with rectangle port heads which are too large in my opinion to begin with for a 454cid marine engine. It's not written in stone---but that's the route I would go. Have fun! :D

Re: 454 manifold suggestions

Payton, the existing manifold is not a high rise. The motor is an omc although I'm sure the manifold is a chevy part; probably the same as the merc 330 hp intake.

For the rest of you the compression is a 8.8:1 but will come out to almost 9:1 when the build is over. I would love to give you the cam specs but it is a custom grind retro fit hydraulic roller cam from the engine builder. All I can tell you is that the cam is mild enough that I will have no reversion problems with my captains call.

The builder estimates the power will be 450-480 hp when all is said and done. He is recommending a merc intake but I wanted an idea if I could do a little better with an aftermarket part.

I have a Chevy 454/502HO high rise dual plane aluminum intake never used.
It came off of a 425HP/454HO crate engine that had a blower bolted on to it.
$50 it's yours...

I run the air-gaps with 750cfm Demon carbs on my 454/400 Cyclones.....great results.....Fred

Edelbrock RPM Air Gap.......great intake.......

altho that $50 intake would be an excellent choice performance AND budget-wise..... Prob would see more than 10hp difference between it, and the Edelbrock.

whoops, meant to say WOULDNT see more than 10 hp difference between it and the Edelbrock....

I've seen good results with the Merc Daul Plane Intake Manifold with a spacer. With the Cubic inches you are running and the RPM range you've indicated I really don't feel you need a single plane intake. Also, the dual plane intake builds a little more torque down low where you need it. In some cases, I've even seen some HP 500 motors make more power with the dual plane. A good friend is running the merc dual plane on his 540's and the motor makes lots of torque and you don't need to rev the piss out of it, the dyno numbers proved it.

Re: 454 manifold suggestions

Merc Manifold also has brass inserts for corrosion.

Re: 454 manifold suggestions

PAT, If that is the merc manifold w/brass inserts I would love to buy it from you. Please give me a phone number or e-mail me at [email protected]

Thanks

Re: 454 manifold suggestions

Just out of curiosity. What if you ran the single plane with oval ports into the rectangle heads? Would you be able to get better velocity with the initial volume of the oval port intake?
not an expert at any of this intake-head "VOODOO-black magic" just curious

Re: 454 manifold suggestions

There is a thread here in the tech section about doing oval/rectangle port setup.

Nothing spectacular, I would have to ask the owner. I'm guessing it was somewhere around .550 - .590 lift.

i am using the same intake ,with a 2 inch spacer with 610/587 540 ci 9/4/1 comp and canfield 310 heads. should make real good tourqe and not have to rev it out. i will post dyno #'s after it's done.

Sounds similiar to what my buddy has, the difference is he had GM heads. He definetely could have used a better set of heads and in my opinion the motors would have perked right up! As it is the motor made just over 600 HP but the torque numbers were much higher. The motors are in a 40 ft. tripple engine hustler and the boat runs upper 90's, and can cruise at 65-70 mph all day long, and 50 mph at 3000 rpms.
