who does good gelcoat work in Austin
Has anyone had good experience with a shop in Austin? I would be willing to go to Houston or DFW if necessary.

Re: who does good gelcoat work in Austin
What do you need to have done? I've heard the shop in Lakeway Custom Boats(?) maybe does good work but since I do my own I can't say first hand. There's also a shop out in Volente but again, I have no first hand experience.

Depending on what you need to have done, Full Throttle Marine might be able to do it. Bob's got mine down there now finishing up getting a new motor in and doing a little gel coat work.

I had a BAD experience with one in Austin. Not any of the above.

Re: who does good gelcoat work in Austin
I need to have my dash completely resurfaced on my 38.

Re: who does good gelcoat work in Austin
Have you considered paint? I can't think of any real advantage gel would have in that application, and the hassle of spaying, sanding, and polishing gel is a huge disadvantage.

Re: who does good gelcoat work in Austin
I do not think paint will work. There are stress cracks that need to be ground out. I know a couple of good shops in Dallas, but they will not have the space for a 38' boat.

Re: who does good gelcoat work in Austin
you might try SUN VALLEY FIBERGLASS.They are just south of Ft Worth off from I35 about a mile. They have two good sized ex aircraft hangers to work in.The phone number is 817-293-9568.Larry Boyd is the owner and contact. They just did a dash for me along with a lot of other work. All gauge holes were filled, the helm was removed and the total dash was matted, glassed, gel coated black, sanded and polished to mirror finish.I had planned on overlaying with carbon fiber. However, after seeing this I am not.

Did you have Larry paint it too?

Re: who does good gelcoat work in Austin
John, I've heard Custom Fiberglass does good work, but are pretty slow and expensive...what's new right? That's not a job I would personally want to undertake. Are you going to pull all the gauges and such or do you anticipate the shop doing it all? We have a good fiberglass man that could do you a good job in gelcoat or imron, but he doesn't do fancy graphics. What we would probably do is derig the dash and then send him the boat to fix the dash. Give me a shout if you want to talk more.

Re: who does good gelcoat work in Austin
Hi John,we have not painted the exterior yet. However,we did show case the bilge with awl grip, filled more holes, did quite abit more in the cockpit, reblueprinted the bottom and are waiting on aluminum to build new engine rails. Then we have to find our CG,establish our datum lines and make a decision for a paint shop.Meanwhile,we are reconfiguring the motors. Two of them should be done when we need them.We are toying with another idea for some grenade motors---close cool the block and open cool the heads. Stay in touch,LE

I'll email you later with some updates. THNX J |
Re: who does good gelcoat work in Austin
Bob, It is the top of the dash not the gauge panel. I would think that one could grind the stress cracks, fill, resurface and spray it solid white - no rigging required. I even have the windshield off. I am hoping that Fountain helps with some warranty $$. I am supposed to hear back this week. I would like to have something lined up as soon as I know.

Re: who does good gelcoat work in Austin
Has anyone used the fiberglass guy who is subcontracted by Emerald Point for their work?
|
Re: who does good gelcoat work in Austin
OK, makes more sense now. Looks like it would be a relatively straight forward repair. Unfortunately it will require a close visual to know for sure(whoever does it). I don't know who does Emerald Point's work but I haven't heard anything bad about them.
