Speedometer Instal.

I am replacing the speedometer in my boat. Do you need to bleed the tube that connects to it? what controls the speedometer; water pressure or air pressure?

Re: Speedometer Instal.

No bleeding needed. Just hook it up and go. It is really nothing more than a pressure gauge with the PSI measured off in MPH, with water pushing on any air that may be in the line. PSI is PSI

I replacing mine with a GPS speedo. I'm tired of replacing pickup tubes and inacurate readings.

Don't bleed it!
You don't want water in your new gauge!!

Hostile,
Make sure that you clamp the hose good. I know some one that had it blow off and blow water all over the back of their panel. Not good!
Why not roll it over to GPS?

Re: Speedometer Instal.

Mike, I would go gps but really just needed a regular speedo that would handle the extra speed from my engine build. I have a handheld gps for accurate speed readings. The cost of the gauge and adapter to connect the two is still very expensive. Then if I forgot the handheld I would have no speed reading at all.

best to start out with youtr tubing full of air.

Then slide a couple of 3/8" long pieces of heat shrink onto the tubing.
Dip the end of the tubing in a coffee cup of hot water to soften it up.
Push the end fully onto the brass barb on the gauge. Slide a piece of heat shrink all the way up to the end of the tubing. Heat it with a match or hrat gun till it gives a good grip. Slide the other piece over it for the heck of it. Heat it up.

If you did as told, and didn't accidentally leave some heatshrink hanging off the backside of the barb, then all is well. If some heat shrink was back too far, it will have pinched the tubing shut.

This heat shrink works much better than any adjustable clamp.
