Re: under hatch mirror

I replaced mine at a local mirror store. Gave them my old ones and they used them for patterns.
I'd tell you how much but it was 3 or 4 years ago and I've slept since then

Call Don Racine at Racine Design in Jacksonville FL, they specialize in it. He can make one and even has whatever color tint you might want. The tinted ones really give it a cool look. His number is 904-771-8170. Just tell him Travis sent you.

I made a template out of card board and had a local shop cut it out. I put some felt strips on the back so it would not rub ,I used # 8 stainless screws with Teflon washers and just snug them. Be careful it cracks real easy. The Hatch on the Scarab was flat so it was easy.

I want to put the mirrors on the Hustler but its curved

I used 1/4" plexiglass mirror, any good glass shop can get it. Mine was 36"x60" ran about $120 bucks.

Did mine last season ... You will need a special drill for plastic ... most places that sell the material also sell the drill bits...

Re: under hatch mirror

How flexible is the mirror-plex? My hatch is about 5' wide but has a bow shape to it. It rises to 2" max in the center.

Payton 02-26-2005 06:58 AM

Re: under hatch mirror

If the mirror is bowed, will it make your engine look like it's in a funhouse mirror?
Then you can really have some fat motors. :D

Re: under hatch mirror

Hey Rob- my Slingshot has the factory option mirrors (hatch and sides of engine compartment). As I recall, the hatch mirror is :D about 1/4" thick and is obviously curved. The factory used what look like 1" OD mirror mounts under the mounting screws. For what it's worth.... Lou

Re: under hatch mirror

My hatch is bowed as well. The effect is minimal, just look at my earlier post. I used RTV clear silicone from the glass shop to hold the center up and it worked out great. No distortion from screw holes. You must however take the hatch off and allow the silicone to dry a couple days before you mount it.

Hey ZT ..how do those hatch lifts work ? can you get almost vertical with them ??

The picture shows them in full extension. They are very fast and work great, they'll throw a fat woman of the sundeck. :-)

Thanks, I figure with my new whipples I need to bling bling it :drink:

Re: under hatch mirror

Rob- On second thought, with those huffers what you need on the under side of the hatch is that tinted stuff used for welding goggles! Just kidding. They definitely will dress up your engine compartment in addition to putting a smile on your face when you lay on it. Speaking of 'laying on it', I just spent an hour 'laying' on my snow shovel. March 1??? Lou

I had the same idea, but could not find any large enough. Sure would make things easier.

Re: under hatch mirror

I don't know about easier, but I'd be willing to bet it would be EXPENSIVE. Probably be quite heavy too even if thin. Plexiglass ain't lite either. Can't win...

Re: under hatch mirror

milled SS sheets come in 4x8ft
22awg is 1.22lbs per sq ft. / its 3/32"
I've got a customer w/a plasma cutter that can get it and cut it for me.
All i'd have to do is polish it, or get my local powdercoater/metal fab shop to do it for me.

I've heard Nortech is doing it now, and its really trick looking.

It would work .The weight would not be much different . The polished stainless is not as sharp [reflective] as the plexi mirror.I bet it would be expensive

You can buy the stainless already polished .

I did a plate on the firewall on my Chevelle and made a cover for the AC compressor. It made a bunch of difference !!

Maybe you can see it in this pick :D

Unless you have done this you can't imagine the number of problems that can come up with.

1. The plastic can easily scratch.
2. If you use screws to hold it up, the mirror distorts, so I made an AL frame to fit around the mirror. (A lot of work)
3.You need to glue or silicone the mirror up in the middle if you don't screw it.
4. If you glue or silicone it up you should take the hatch off.
5. Engine heat can distort it or worse melt it on the engine.

Stainless mirror if cut to size can just be screwed around the edge and your done.

I've got black motors and tore mine off, looks better white.

On my Scarab the mirror was real close to the headers and did not warp or dis color. It would even touch when more than 3 people where on the sun pad standing.. I did not glue it either just put a backing on it because like a Glass mirror it has a silver paint type backing to make it a mirror.Pick above . the screws do make it look warped . needs a frame to look the best ,But :( hard to do sometimes and could not be done on a hustler.

St your are right about scratching and I did crack 2, one from jumping on the hatch and the other was the screw.

My firewall on the Chevelle does tarnish[stain or get alittle cloudy] a little and will distort from the screws .its thin when it comes already polished .

My buddy owned a sheet metal shop that did a building entrance all polished stainless .They called it Mirror lake plaza ..the hole front of the building was and is mirror   there was alot of left over scraps . :D When the shop changed buildings the scraped all the droppings . I cried like a bit*ch you could not imagine what they thru away.he did not call me :( :( There was dumpsterSSSS full of stainless ,aluminum.that was 5 year ago and I am getting upset again bring it up:(

Rob :drink:

The hatch mirror was about $80 cut out on the Scarab.

Black ? You mean tinted or smoked?

EvilTwin I like yours . Nice and different . That would look good with the neon lights that Rick the slick gladiator has with those JCPer hand gernade motors :D

I guess thats blue tint?? I think I might try that . tell me more :D :drink:

black motors ( not blue :( ) and not worth drawing attention to, when mirrors were off for new sun pad never put em back on.

You can also use a product called brite plate, its a checker plate, polished, shiney about 1/8" thick and light weight, its the same stuff they made truck tool boxes with. I use it for running boards on my trailer. it costs about $80.00 for a 4 x 8 sheet. available at Metal By The Foot, Kansas City Mo.
816 241-5550 good luck

Stormrider 03-04-2005 01:48 PM

Re: under hatch mirror

Just priced out polsihing the SS.
$300-400, just for the polishing.
Right now my boat doesn't warrant it.
But the shine will last forever.

The color came that way I beleive from cig (?). There is no "tint" (meaning like tinted windows). It is in the plexi I believe.
