Transmissions

1200HP #6Drives Who makes the the best trans
and service for the money?

Re: Transmissions

1200 hp is a lot of demand for a shifting tranny and is usually crashbox territory... The Super Cyborg series from BAM is your only viable option.

Just my .02 :D

Re: Transmissions

Thanks Kurt I asked Murcury at the Miami boat show who's transmission
they used? He said Huber Marine's they have used them for
years. Anybody out there with any history on Huber's

Re: Transmissions

I'm using a BAM Super Cyborg dry sump behind 1500hp with no trans problems. Have over 100 hrs to date.

Re: Transmissions

I don't think you can go wrong with either BAM or Huber. I'd talk to Tom Huber and Mark at BAM, compare and make a choice. I've been using Huber 1330's for the last 5 years with no complaints. You may want to start by looking at the Hubermarine web site to gain an understanding of what it is he does to the tranny's and go from there. Just tryin to help.

Re: Transmissions

You would want Huber's Kryptonite series with the increased # of clutch packs. Tom is great to work with.

Re: Transmissions

I'm running Hubers with 1050 hp and no problems. However I think 1200 may be a different animal as My friends with 1200 have had problems. I am building some 1200/1400's and have been very concerned. I were going to purchase something new I think it would be a shiftable crashbox. I talked with them yesterday and they sounded great, Also you can get the shifters set up to were you shift just like a tranny, No switches,

Re: Transmissions

What company sells the Crashbox I may want to check them out?
Thanks RAP

Re: Transmissions

Call MArc at BAM. They are now building the trans for Mercury 1075. HE is great to work with and great pricing. I''ve hav 5 racing seasons of a set or super cyborgs with 1000Hp behind them. If you need help with crashboxes he's your man also. Should have some on the shelf. Not good idea for pleasure application though. 954-545-8681 tell him Andy from Rascal Racing sent you.

Re: Transmissions

Why not talk to Weismann while you're at it?

Crash boxes? How fun! Especially docking in a breeze.

Why not go for the trifecta- Crash boxes/Arnesons/Wide tunnel cat

Re: Transmissions

I was Referring to shiftable crash boxes, Which as stated earlier can be set up with Latham controls to shift exactly like a transmission, no switches.I am hoping for the best with trannies but I don't think and tranny will hold up to 1200hp and the TQ asociated with it, or at least I haven't seen anyone do it yet.
The manufacture of the shiftable crashboxes is SCS Gear, 419-483-7278.

Re: Transmissions

You might want to call Rod Tschiggfrie for a shiftable crash box system that works. He owns Sorcercer

He was the first to develop one an it works really well.

There is a push button on the shifters but that is not a negative. It works and that is a positive.

Re: Transmissions

I was told you had to shut the engine off than shift from forward or reverse
and hope the engine refires and hope you don't hit anything (docking)?
Thanks RAP

Rik 03-03-2005 06:24 PM

Re: Transmissions

I've used the system that Tschiggfrie has. Simply click the switch on the shifter and shift. No waiting no problems. Release switch and the boat goes in the direction the shifter is in.

No shutting down and restarting.

Re: Transmissions

sounds cool when a crash box boat is coming in... i don't know how much fun it would to be dock .... didn't rod use compressed air for his system?

44MTI 03-03-2005 07:29 PM

Re: Transmissions

The ones that SCS builds use an air actuated clutch. There have been many used it Outerlimits and Skaters. I believe Speed Racer also used this one also. They put a push button is Speed Racer, But if you use the Latham controls you do nothing but shift JUST like your tansmissions, no buttons or switches, no killing the motors. Actually when you go into Neutral with this system you are engaging the Clutch so you can go right into gear with and problems and the clutch automatically realeases.

Rik 03-03-2005 08:06 PM

Re: Transmissions

That's the system, minus the micro switches, that Tschiggfrie developed.

SCS was using a centrifugal clutch that would disengage when the rpms fell to idle speeds.

Sage aparently copied Tschiggfrie.

Re: Transmissions

Interesting, I am planning on going with crash boxes because I trashede the trannies Huber (1200's) in last two races. Shiftable crash boxes sure sound like transmissions to me....what is the benefit????

Re: Transmissions

If the new style crashbox with a clutch, how much torque can they handle?
Thanks RAP

Actually Rod uses SCS's crashbox, Rod didn't design it.

The clutch is only used to engage & disengauge.
Clutch is not used once under way, it's back to a crashbox
once you release the shifter.

Rod designed the shifting design of the system not the crash box. For that matter, any crash box will fit to the system that Rod made.

Re: Transmissions

Fair enough. :D

Spoke with Rod some time back about buying a crashbox from him. Came down to it he told me is was SCS's box.

Irritated at the point cause he was way higher in price than SCS.
And I let him know. At that point he told me to deal with SCS cause he didn't know how or why Mike sage was selling thme at the price offered at that time.
