Re: 496 MAG ????'s
More power without going inside? Whats power? 15 hp = 1 mph. I think everybody needs at least 75 horse more, if not 150 hp.2-3 mph usually cant be felt. Speed cost money son!!! Raylar today so far. Greg

Re: 496 MAG ????'s
The old 454 and 502 Mag Mpi's have several upgrade kits mainly consisting of ecm re-programming, adjustable fuel press regulators, high flow arrestor, thermostat and hotter ignition, claiming 40 to 50 hp increases. I remember an old article in Hot Boat by Jim Wilkes where he tested one of these kits on a 502 with very good results 5-6 mph gain!
Where's something like this for the 496??? :D The 496 has been on the scene now for 5+ years, you would think somebody would have figured out an affordable upgrade solution by now... Raylar's kit looks promising, but there's a lot involved and it's pricey... |
Re: 496 MAG ????'s
The head design of the 496 will win out over the 502/454 "old" style heads eventually. THe heads have equal port volume that leads to equality between cyllinders as far a mixture goes. I think that part of the problem is that GM is putting cast cranksin the motors now. For best reliability forged components are best. So I think that not as many people are putting the money forward in developing the motor if the base isnt tough enough to stand the extra power. G

Re: 496 MAG ????'s
I wouldn't think 50 more hp would be disasterous to this motor? I've heard the earlier 496's have forged cranks. One hp per cube would be nice...

Re: 496 MAG ????'s
Our BCK103 kit is very affordable for a 100+HP add on. A 100HP addtion 425HP to 525HP and the 496 MAG goes from 375HP to 525HP that 150 HP more which should translate to about 15 Miles per hour more with the right prop. As for going inside, our kits go on quite easy. I don't know of any outside parts that will add 100 hp to a 496 except a blower and if you don't change the pistons, you will be going back "inside" sooner than you think! If anyone here thinks they are going to add 100HP cheaper than our kit, they don't know much about marine engines. Price a HP525 motor and you will see what 100HP more than a stock 496HO will cost.

I'll kill the bank for HP. That's my business dude. I am working on a 20 Cigarette w/ a 800 HP turbine for myself!!!!! I have a customer getting started and I am trying to get another 50-100 out of the 496 for him for under 5K. Just curious if anyone has any secrets. |
Re: 496 MAG ????'s
Nitrous would work, not a good idea but it would work. Some people have done it but usually with bad results. In order to take advantage of the nitrous you would have to over prop for normal running and you rpms would be to low for wide open (no nitrous) operation.
I would not do it on my boat but It would be fun to see it on yours! |
Re: 496 MAG ????'s
Ray,
What does the bck 103 go for on a 496 HO and what does it do to the warranty? |
Re: 496 MAG ????'s
Good question how much is that Raylar kit? Can the Raylar heads be ported for more power? If so how much. Is there a 4 barrel manifold for the 496? What is the final compression with the raylar heads? Greg

Re: 496 MAG ????'s
how much power would you get out of the bk101 kit on a 496 mag
|
Re: 496 MAG ????'s
yesrej:
The Raylar BK101 kit is designed for a truck or RV and has an emmissions friendly cam and would not work well in a 496 boat version. I would suggest if you are trying to keep the costs in your budget that you consider the BCK102 kit which would give you about 450HP from a 496Mag motor with your stock mag ECM. You can run our BCK103 kit with 525HP with a change to a 496HO ECM or a reprogram to HO specs of your ECM by Dustin at Whipple. I just had a call today from a customer who just made this change over on his boat with our BCK103 kit on a 496Mag and he called to say the results on the water were fantastic. His boat gained 12mph and he has yet to get the prop totally dialed in. Needless to say he is thrilled and he said anyone who would like to call him for confirmation is welcome. His name is Young and he can be reached in the daytime at (805) 527-1270. We have a lot of boaters and references you can call for info or you can read about an independant test of our kit in the May issue of HOT Boat due out next week. I think there are go'in to be a lot of Raylar equipped 496's runn'in around this year when more 496 owners get the real "word" on our kits for the 496. Ray @ Raylar |
Re: 496 MAG ????'s
Does the BCK103 kit add any height to the engine?
buyafountain, how many hrs on your 496's? What about pulling and selling them and building NA 502 or 540? Probably end up spending close to the same $$. |
Re: 496 MAG ????'s
[QUOTE=Dave M]Does the BCK103 kit add any height to the engine?
I measured my stock intake manifold at 10" to the top of the plenum stud for the cover, and 10 1/2" to the top of the oil fill cap. The plastic cover adds another 1" or so. My Raylar intake measures 10 1/2" to the top of the plenum and 11 1/2" to the top of the oil fill cap. |
Re: 496 MAG ????'s
Just so everybody with a 496 knows the tallest point on tne 496 engine package is the top of the exhaust risers. Our kit and the stock cover are both about 1" below the stock risers.
If your engine cover closes over the stock exhaust risers it will close easily over our kits. Ray @ Raylar |
