engine weight
 

Anyone know the weight of an assembled 454 minus accessories, exhaust, carb, alt, water pump,p/s. Harbor freight has a 1 ton chain hoist, 1/4" links, for $50 and I'm wondering if this is adequate to pull the motor.

Be careful with harbor freight tools, they usually are not the best quality. I wouldn't trust it to lift a motor over a boats transom. Spend the extra money and get a good hoist from somewhere.

I know that my std 454 330hp weighs 440kg/970lb with all accessories except oil...

1/4" will hold 2000#. It doesn't really care who made it. Thats the one I'm using(the HF cheapo) and have lifted well over 1500# with it. I'm sure there are better ones but mine works fine,,Ive got an old BIGGIE for larger stuff.

I would never buy anything from Harbor Freight that my personal safety (or the transom of my boat) relies on. I'll buy an anvil or possibly a bench vise from them. Not much else.

I bought an engine stand from them that was a total POS. It was rated for 1250 lbs but sagged only having 1/2 that much weight on it.
