I have heard that the Cometic gaskets are re-usable----anyone know if that is true or not or just a rumor/tale?

I put the heads back on last night!!!!!!!

Maybe one of your bearings are in upside down?? Or did you forget to torque a rod bolt? I'm sure you may need to check these items

Fel pro makes 2 of the BBC metal head gaskets . the 1075 and I use the 1075-1 its for the thicker  with a volume of 14.6. Ck out my thread on the Hustler build up there are some picks of them there . I have no experience with the cometic . I have heard good things .If I did not get the Fel Pro stuff for free I might? of tried the cometic's.

As far as the loc wire gaskets . Nobody really uses or needs to use them anymore just ask Fel pro teck .!800-325-8886.The MLS has been in there line for awhile and they said Nascar has been using them over the lock wire .They even sent me a set to try in the late 80's and I never did.

My connection with Fel Pro is when they came out with the Loc Wire I was doing some R&D with them on some NOS motors. I would run them and send them back for them to look at . They where tuff I never blew one, but hurt alot of parts though :D FelPro says the MLS is stronger than there lock wire gaskets.

Ck out the directions on the box ,They don't even want finger prints on the gasket surface . There is a sticky coating that attracts everything. They want a ra of 40-50. thats smooth :D

For the gen 6 stuff
They offer a top end kit 17207 comes with a 17048 head gasket for a bore up to 4.550.

The bottom end kit is a 17146 and come with the good one piece oil pan gasket.

The MLS 1075 is a .041 thick with a 4.580 bore
the 1075-1 is a .053 thick with a 4.580 bore

The new small block chevy stuff is a
1142 .041 thick with a 4.100 bore
1143 .041 thick with a 4.165 bore
1144 .041 thick with a 4.200 bore

Hope this helps
Rob :drink:
