Head reconditioning $$$$$ ????
I'm redoing the heads on my 1989 454 mag. Nothing special, bone stock and I'm keeping it that way. What should I expect dollar-wise for a full head job. Valve/seat grind, new springs, seals, guides, decking, etc.
Just wanna have some ballpark numbers so I don't get hosed. |

Re: Head reconditioning $$$$$ ????
Let's see, I have the receipt from the last heads I had done.
It was $882.43 soup to nuts for 2 heads. This included HD 3 angle Valve Job, resurface, new severe duty + inconel valves, springs, valve seals, intake gaskets, exhaust gaskets and valve cover gaskets. Head gaskets I already had in stock.. |
Re: Head reconditioning $$$$$ ????
Well, I guess I'd better get ready for little more bling than I had thought.

Re: Head reconditioning $$$$$ ????
the machine work is relatively cheap, it's the other stuff that costs $$.
Valve job $220 Surface $80 |
Re: Head reconditioning $$$$$ ????
I can't even count the number of times i took a set of heads in for rework and they ended up needing every thing listed above plus seats and valves, end up having 80 % of what new aftermarket heads cost spent on run of the mill stock heads. Alot of times someone may be willing to give you 200-300$ for a tired set of rectangle port stock heads, you can turn around and buy turn key merlins with inconel valves for the difference of what you may have in doing up your heads, something to think about,Smitty

Merlin rectangle port heads are the way to go. Don't forget the required longer outside head bolts. Joe Murray
