Mesa test mufflers power and speed claims
Guys for you up north with the noise restrictions I read an article on Hot Boat with manufacturer claiming no power loss and no speed loss I can't tell you which brands are claiming this but I can tell you that I have a customers boat that is slightly off on the speed were we need to be and I modified the mufflers and picked up 4 mph on the GPS on flat water this unit is one with that claim of no power loss before you buy make your decision do your home work so you don't buy crap like this. Your welcome to contact me any time with any help you may need.Sincerely Laz Mesa

Re: Mesa test mufflers power and speed claims
Laz, what type? Full time or switchable? If full time what brand? How did you modify and what were the DB differences? Thanks, Joe Murray

Re: Mesa test mufflers power and speed claims
Guys I made a couple of dif changes but the best one I made was I cut the guts out with a plasma cutter and made a new insert with a swinging trap door like on the oil pans and thats were I got the spring from an old pan at an idle they are quite and most important don't rattle so you don't know they are modified and at anything above 2500 rpm they open no restriction and positively no power loss and the speed back up were it needs to be now let see who copies my idea and makes a real no power loss muffler quite through restricting is always going to cost power and speed no matter what brand they look good but they suck maybe I'll patent the doors just joking good luck guys feel Free to call if you need any type of help Sincerely Laz Mesa
P.S. We need to get more Mesa power up North |
Re: Mesa test mufflers power and speed claims
Is it quiet enough that I dont need anymore muffeling devices ?? Do you know anybody with a decimeter that can check and see where were are at sound wise ?? Keep working on it. Grab Albert and hit the water for me please. Have a good weekend

Re: Mesa test mufflers power and speed claims
I too bought one of the "better" performing mufflers from that published test. Just recieved them. I won't know how they perform till late spring but I will say I am very disappointed in the quality of the workmanship.
I asked to have them swedged for the 4.5 inch diameter pipes I use. Wow what a hack job. For nearly $1800 bucks I expected at least a neat application and welding. I will contact them and give them a chance to rectify the 4 mufflers as they will not go on the boat as they are now. If they Balk, I will post their name and pictures withing the next few days. I will also call Mastercard to see what my options are. |

Re: Mesa test mufflers power and speed claims
I guess I should have said "muffled" and did not choke off too much RPM

Sadly, arguably the best muffler around is the GGB, and they didn't make it into the Hot Boat tests sadly...
I replaced my Corsa's with some GGB Extremes a couple of weeks ago and gained 100 rpm's!! They sound awesome, too. Take a look at www.ggb.ca. Here's a picture of the insides of mine. You tell me how they flow!!!! I bought mine from Bob at Full Throttle Marine. Kent |

Re: Mesa test mufflers power and speed claims
These ARE the ticket!
GGB makes clamp-ons and transom mount Extreme's. I opted for the transom mount. The clamp-ons are the same design. They use some type of noise cancelling technology instead of stupid baffles that kill your hp. Did you see the dyno test on their website? A 502 actually gained torque at certain RPM's over OPEN EXHAUST!! They also come with an integrated internal flapper, so no more ugly external Salisbury!! The retail price if I remember right is $890 per pair, not cheap, but they are a work of art, and WORK. Mark my words! I would recommend calling Bob at FTM. He is a dealer, and has used lots of these in mostly blown engine boat projects where they needed mufflers. His number is 830-693-5591. Formula78, are you going to the Ski Dock poker run on April 9th? I plan on going. If you go, then you can check these out first hand for looks and sound. They sound awesome, and only 89db on my engine (measured 4' behind and to the side of the boat at idle). Our limit on Travis is 92db. Look me up if you go! My little tiny Donzi is Purple and Yellow with no fancy graphics. I can post a picture of my boat, if you decide to go and want to meet up... Or, I'm on the lake full time! Let me know if you want to come by anytime to check these out. I live on the Bee Creek cove. Take care, Kent |
Re: Mesa test mufflers power and speed claims
I also posted a video on the 'other' forum (SW) of my HP500 idling in the dock. You can see the GGB's and hear them!!
I don't know how to post a video here. Kent |
Re: Mesa test mufflers power and speed claims
I'm also running the GGB's on a pair of blower motors. They work fantastic. No power loss at all.

I found a price on the slip ins at $169 on the net, but there is a lot less to a slip in than a transom mount so I am sure that accounts for it. I will call Bob, I have not done any business with him yet but I need to support the local guys or we wont have them. With any luck I will make the poker run on the 9'th, but I am not 100% positive. The motor is still at the machine shop and I am out of town until at least April 1. That gives me a week to get everything done so it may be cutting it close. I'm crossing my fingers but I may be enjoying the run from the shore. I have an old baby bird with no graphics so your Donzi will be in good company. |
Re: Mesa test mufflers power and speed claims
I tried some slip in silencers on a hot small block and they killed the power output. The boat lost 5 MPH and the acceleration was way off. I can't imagine how bad they would hurt the performance on a 500+ HP big block!!

Re: Mesa test mufflers power and speed claims
Is there an unwritten rule for not giving prices on this site. Who gives the best price on the GGB's. The slip inns on my old boat also lost mph and speed. Restriction was so bad it warped the stainless pipe!
|
Re: Mesa test mufflers power and speed claims
I would believe that about any slip-ins. Those are a radically different design. It's kind of like the old 'you get what you pay for' thing...
Biggus has a beautiful setup with his boat. He is one of the reasons I bought mine! I think that Bob at FTM would make you the best deal. Sorry, but I can't post what I paid for them. Best of luck Formula78 on getting your boat back in the water! It would be fun to meet up. Kent |
Re: Mesa test mufflers power and speed claims
Anyone running the Gibsons?
At $499 shipping included (Trick Marine), it is a good deal. I am curious as to a comparison to the GGB mufflers. |

Re: Mesa test mufflers power and speed claims
I dealt directly with Graham at GGB. Graham custom made a set of extreme clamp on for my stellings dry exhaust. They have turn downs welded on to reduce the noise at idle. I will be modifying the exhaust to dump water at the very end of the tale pipe. The engine idles at 109db, so this is the only way I think I'll past 90db without major power loss. I should know in a couple weeks, and I'll post a picture with the results ASAP.
BTW, stock clamp on run about a grand a pair. |
