Gimbal rust
1 Attachment(s)
The inside of the gimbal has some rusted areas.
What is the easiest way to clean this up? Buy new bolts?? What kind of paint? And i prefer not to use spray paint in here. |
Re: Gimbal rust
I Would Just Wirer Brush And Paint. If You Pull Bolts, Could Turn Into A Real Job. Sealing Holes & Transom Assm. Use A Paint W/hardener Is Best That Way It Will Last Longer. Spray In A Can Does Not Have Hardener. And Will Come Off With Gas & Oil When It Gets On It. Ron Bender :d

Re: Gimbal rust
Thats pretty much what i'm doing.
Cleaning w/ wire bush. After i wiped it down w/ some Swipes, there really isn't much to paint, just some touch up. Thanks for the reply. |
Re: Gimbal rust
I have used Muriadic acid in the past to remove rust, but you need to be careful with it to minimize the exposure to other areas. Also be sure to wash it all off then clean and paint with a paint that you add hardener.

Re: Gimbal rust
I too have used Muriatic Acid to clean rusted steel. It works well however the fumes are wicked strong and dangerous. When using this acid on steel not only does it require a good water rinse, one should follow up with a basic treatment (pH) like potassium hydroxide, to neutralize the acidic state. This too should be followed by rinsing. This extra step will prevent future rust from forming.

Thanks for all your help guys.
I'm done already. Looks good enough. Once the engine is in, I'm sure you wont see any of this. Here is an after/before. |
