Lower Shift Cable??

I just had to replace my shift cable that goes from the top of the engine down into the outdrive. Before the replacement I had to jam it into fwd gear, now it shifts better but not as good as I think it should. I am running Red Line Heavy Shock Proof oil and my mechanic said I should probably go back to the Mercury High Performance Gear lube. Could the Red Line be the reason for it not shifting smoothly or do I have another problem? From what I can remember it shifted fine before I put in the Red Line oil.
