So what was the end result, is this the new technology for flushing the 496 HO??

I keep having to fix the same ($$$$) problem over and over again, mechanic states that the flush kit that was installed by the factory does not work right for the 496HO. 4 other new boats with 496's and minimal hours are running into the same problem at my marina.

I need something to flush the engine thats not going to destroy the impeller or housing everytime I run it on the hose.

The pic that Sydwayz posted is very interesting is this Mercury's answer to the the existing flush problem??

I took the part number and went to my local Mercury dealer. I ordered two kits for my 496HO twins. The installation was straight forward but I did have to hire a young, wiry mechanic type to assist me with the installation steps under the engines. The install work took us about 2.5 hours per engine. Once the installation was complete, it works like a champ. I consider it money well spent.

OLD thread but I have a question about this flush kit. I just got my boat back from the shop. While there I had this flush kit installed. The male quick connect that you put on the end of the hose won't go in the female part far enough to have water flowing to the water pump. I have to push the male part down VERY hard to get any water to flow. If I let any pressure off it the water stops flowing. Needless to say I have not ran the motor on it, I don't want to distroy the impeller. Anyone else have this problem?

Mine works well. You must insert the male fitting with enough pressure to feel it click/lock into the receiver. Once it is properly docked, you will hear the water flow into the seapump. There is a press button on the side of the receiver that must be pressed to unlock the male fitting. Can you check it close for a possible burr in the plastic that might be causing a misfit?? Just a guess.....

Not to be a total idiot, but does the hose need to be on before I put the male end into the receiver?

If so I feel pretty dumb. I will check this in the AM.

Yes sir, it does. You will discover the male end will remain closed until it snaps into the receiver.

I will try it in the morning. Hopefully that will solve the problem and I will just feel dumb. :lolhit:

Anytime sir....I call it a senior moment!!

You will be able to get the leverage necessary to force the M --> F with a hose on the end of it.
