Furshman-Hannon team takes lead at Marathon Gran Prix

MARATHON, Fla.
Florida powerboat racers Brett Furshman and Troy Hannon took their Miccosukee Indian Gaming boat to the lead in the Super Vee class Saturday at the Marathon Offshore Gran Prix in the Florida Keys.

Instigator, piloted by Joe Sgro and Peter Meyer of Long Island, N.Y., crossed the finish line first, but was one of five Super Vee boats that incorrectly navigated a turn buoy at the end of the first lap.

"They were supposed to pass it on the port side, but they passed it on the starboard side," said race director John Carbonell. "According to our rules, if they negotiate a turn incorrectly, they have to correct the error at that time. If not, the race ends for them."

The violation dropped Instigator to fourth place in the nine-boat Super Vee class. Furshman, of Coral Springs, and Hannon, of Davie, saw several of the boats miss the turn, so the change in finish was not a surprise.

"There's another race to go, so we'll see what happens," said Furshman.

In second place is Team Taboo driven by Bill Mazzoni of Delray Beach and Craig Wilson of Port St. Lucie. In third is Fountain, piloted by David Knight of Moncure, N.C., and Ben Roberson of Grimesland, N.C.

The second and final race of the weekend is set for Sunday afternoon. Compilation of total points from both days of racing will determine event winners in various classes.

Sgro-Meyer team takes lead at Marathon Gran Prix

MARATHON, Fla.
New York powerboat racers Joe Sgro and Peter Meyer drove Instigator to an easy win Saturday during the first of two races that comprise the Marathon Offshore Gran Prix in the Florida Keys.

Race officials originally said they were placing Instigator fourth for incorrectly navigating a turn buoy at the end of the first lap. Later Saturday night, they overturned that decision and restored the Sgro-Meyer team to the top of the standings in the nine-boat Super Vee class.

In second place is Rodriguez Group, piloted by Michel Karsenti of Cannes, France. The Miccosukee Indian Gaming boat, driven by Brett Furshman of Coral Springs and assisted by Troy Hannon of Davie, was third.

Sgro and Meyer of Long Island never relinquished the lead during the 7.5-lap, 49-mile course on the Gulf of Mexico side of the Seven Mile Bridge.

"We just took off and didn't look back," said Meyer, the boat's throttleman.

Instigator, a 38-foot Fountain with two 525-horsepower engines, averaged 93.4 mph.

The second and final race of the weekend is set for Sunday afternoon. Compilation of total points from both days of racing will determine event winners in various classes.
