Hey everyone-its Jeff (JBS).Ive read all the posts and thought Ide give my own.This is what I recall- after alot of close racing with pier 57 back and forth both inside and out in corners and straight aways something happened in that corner that is hard to explain or comprehend.I had no idea lighning strikes was even around-I thought we checked out a few laps ago.Anyway that doesnt matter.Coming into turn 1-we had started our turn and were ahead of pier 57 and out of nowhere they passed us on the inside like we were parked.At that point continued on our turn and not a second later Joe said we were going to hit.I couldnt see that side so I couldnt tell how close they were or at what angle they were coming.Anyway I obviosly tried to turn the boat as much as possible to hopefully avoid any contact.BOOM-we slammed together enough to send us into a very near spin out.I saved us from spinning and was focussing on still making the #2 bouy.Out of the corner of my eye was lighning strikes completely airborn coming at us nearly perpedicular.I realy thought they just went right through us and didnt realize they went over us.It all happened so fast that there realy wasnt time to react or be scared.After realizing we were ok and getting out I noticed the fire and damage on the stern of the boat.Damage from pier 57 was onlt a yellow and blue scuff-didnt even crack the gellcoat surprisingly.Thats what I recall-I dont blame anyone-It is close proximity racing on an unstable surface and obviosly we all try to be as safe as possible.Its incredibly lucky that nobody was killed.Its unfotunate for us because our boat isnt fixable and the future of JBS racing is relying heavily on sponsorship at this point.Like I said-it all happened incredibly fast-blink of an eye.Im not detered from racing or shook up or anything.Any questions you can contact me at [email protected]

Let me tell you, I got chills when I saw that video. No $hit, you are lucky to have a head right now. That was too damn close. What can we do to help you guys out?? (besides a new Donzi)

Could this canopy failure have been a design flaw? Would a roll cage have helped in this situation? What would or is the next step to protect the remaining racers in the 2 Donzi boats or twin canopy boats?

It probably failed due to the 8000lbs of boat traveling 80mph........

To Pier 57, JBS and Lightning Strikes....Its great to hear that you all agree its no one persons fault....its one of those things that can happend...unfortunitly it happend so fast that there was nothing anyone of you could do to avoid it....we all have been in a race that we could say if that boat would have hooked or if we would have spun out in that turn, that there would have been a major collision.....we not only trust the guy or girl sitting next to us, but the teams racing with us and that trust and confindents is why we have deck to deck racing....thus the name of the sport..RACING...We always can learn from a accident...and in this one, we still have everyone hear with us.
Jeff, I feel for you losing your boat and the work you guys put in to get your program were it is today...if there is something we can do let us know....
We all can sit here and tell everyone what looks like happend and try to put blame on someone....but the thruth is we got to hear from the racers in the boats and hear how quickly things can go from great racing to near traggity...and they put blame on no one...we have all been there racing...I think all you guys and girl, have presented yourselves very professionally in this matter....hope to see you all back racing soon......

Donzi bow-1, Jeff/Joey-0. Fortunately that was not the case.

I believe the canopy did a pretty good job. It was designed for a WATER IMPACT on a rollover or barrel roll, not a 8000lb. missile sliding directly over-top of it. I can still see space above Jeff's head and the canopy.

The other problem is what Lightning Strikes did to the engine compartment etc., could have been JBS heads if the drives/motors had crossed there.

Remember, the canopies are off airplanes and tested to withstand hitting a chicken at mach 1, not an 8000lb boat.

Personally I thought the canopy lived through it rather well. A metal roll bar would have helped it stay in place but only if it was attached to the bottom of the boat, and not connected to the dash.

So, Dlaw, when's your first SV race? Sarasota?
