water conditions
While we call it offshore racing we all realize that sometimes the water is flat, as for racing which do you guys think gives better spectating, rough or flat.
1. Flat water is very conducive to high speeds and pushing the boat to the envelop. 2.Rough water is conducive to seeing who has the biggest set, and can your equipment handle it. |

Re: water conditions
Gotta say rough...otherwise we should be racing ChampBoats or Hydros.
And to add to #2...great "air time" Sean |
Re: water conditions
Very Rough!
|
Re: water conditions
Big stuff
|
Re: water conditions
as far as a fan, rough is cool unless all the boats break and there is one boat circling at the end... so maybe just enough rough to make interesting without killing the whole field... although there is nothing cooler to watch than a smooth first lap of supercats with all those guys barreling into the first corner.... :D  :drink:

Re: water conditions
6-8 yrds not ft. Love the air time

Re: water conditions

Re: water conditions
Ruffer the better SBI style...
|
Re: water conditions
Go BIG or go home.
|
Re: water conditions
I think a race series no matter which one should be 75% rough and 25% flat to change it up a little. Just my opinion.
   |
Re: water conditions
SBI Style? Frank you really need to come up here. Miami was for kids. Nottin like Jersey holes. Anyway, I would race in my bathtub if I had to. Offshore Rocks.

Re: water conditions
Frank ...time to man up. I95 north bound.
Dont be scared of NJ WATER  |
Re: water conditions
I love watching the Cats run fast and loose.I agree with Dennis, there should be a mix of calm and rough water.I think I lean more to wards the flatter courses for the reason of the equipment. Also in smoother waters everybody can brag about the speeds, although it is more dangerous to run in flat courses in my opinion. What race venues have both conditions?

Re: water conditions
Wil,
I would say Key West has both, Once your in M/S its just a little snotty and down to turn one is normally one to two's, but when you make that turn all hell brakes loose for the next 2 to 3 miles till you back inside M/S... Cleveland is another, on the inside of the brake wall is calm...then it can get ugly once you head outside into open waters... |
Re: water conditions
Their have been plenty of races that are traditionally rough water but have been flat, daytona 2003, is a good example. the prevoius years were nasty.

Re: water conditions
Gino,
Good ones.I have never raced in Cleveland but it does present a challenge to guess what props to use.I also heard Corpus Christi has the same set up.I guess that is one of the reasons Key West is so tough to win. Thanks, Wil |
Re: water conditions
For spectators, bigger is better for me I like 3-4 footers max. I was in Cape Cod the year APBA raced in that big stuff for 50 miles and it was no fun after the 2nd lap. Further more not many people can afford to run in that big stuff and expect to make the next race or even the rest of the season. You will break your boat and drive much quicker. We all say we like it big and then when you get in it I have seen plenty of people back way off or even not race there boats. ASK FRANK he loves the SBI big water races where he can really air out his boat and fly across the big stuff. I have never seen lap speeds like his when its the big stuff. Way to go Kool Hand.
MD  |
Re: water conditions
Big is good for us guys with 35-40 foot boats. I've raced big water in a 22-28 footer and man it kills you.
Cleveland is a great example of a good mix. about (2) miles behind the break-wall and (3) miles outside in the sloppy cross chop of good old Lake Erie. |
