Steve

We lost a neighbor's brother under similar circumstances...

A NJ policeman, he worked with the State on high speed driving instruction for both cars and motorcycles.

He was given a course at one of the stock car driving schools at a track in North Carolina. On his final solo he spun into the infield wall and died of a BSF.

I was privvy to some video taken just before he went out on his fatal run. His instructer reached in and tightened his belts as is required for a 5 point harness to work properly. As the instructor turned away....the driver, a truly experienced professional...reached up and loosened both shoulder straps...
on camera. This simple little human reaction to discomfort probably cost him his life. Here was a man with a helmet, 5 point harness, safety seat, flame retardant suit...etc and lost his life

The point? It is the simplest little details that make all the difference........... On that, I'm sure we agree.

Somebody was telling me that Dale Sr always either took of his seat belts or loosened them towards the end of the race. Is this true? Anybody ever know 100% what happened in his accident?

TX2,
We at Security Race Products are currently looking and trying to design a use able likejacket for the HANS Device as known exist right now. The problem that we have found is that if you had a HANS on and inflated your AirVest under it, the vest could push your helmet up so high that it could damage your neck or cut your throat/chin with the strap. We are working on a special SRP AirVest that has no inflation under the HANS. I will update you and everyone else with more info as we get it.

I'll be interested in how you make out Ben. In the meantime I'll be wearing my Hans device in Destin.

Thanks

There are those out there with far more knowledge than I, but I think the Basel skull fracture senario is exactly what caused his death. Whether it was reported his safety belts were loosened or not I donīt know. When I viewed the footage of the accident I couldnīt believe he had died in what looked like a trivial accident.

Marc,
Call me about your HANS. You should NOT wear your HANS with your AirVest! You would be much better off without a lifejacket at all.

Steve:

When I raced SVL w/Park , we put full time air in. I always wondered if it would work in a roll over. Our exit plan was for me to saty put and Bill use my helmet to push off on his exit.

That's FUNNY!!! Because when I raced with Bill Park in his Solarized, he too told me basically the same thing. He said; "Ben, In the event of a rollover, you sit tight and I go out first and when I am safe and taken care of in the safety boat, I will send them back after you. But remember, I GO OUT FIRST! And as I am the owner don't even think about challenging me for that canopy hole!!!" I said; "OK Bill, will do!!!"...
Bill Park was hilarious when it came to safety and who was going to be rescued first. Oh and ask him who got sick in Cape Cod and who DIDN'T... :D

Ben I personally saw his head spin 360 degrees and talk in some language that I still do not understand today.
