Cam drive water pumps

I'm trying to get a pair of motors together from scratch. Been looking at sea water pumps. Mercruiser uses belt drive on there motors.Volvo has used crank drive pumps, forever. And both seem to work good.Has any one used the magnaflow cam drive pumps on your offshore boats.I have no pumps at all and,I like the magnaflows, because of NO belt.Realy don't now which way to go.Any opinions. Thanks John

Re: Cam drive water pumps

John,

I have one of the Magna-Flow pumps on my race boat: see www.bountyhunteroffshore.com.

It was on there from the last owner, Jim Arvis, who ran it under the Mt. Dew banner in A-class. It was my first experience with these pumps and have been generally pleased. Jim noted going to it because of the simplicity and not needing a belt (I assume there was a DNF at some point due to a lost belt).

The only issue I have had is after one race, I pulled the pump appart to find an impeller fin broken-off and logged in one of the distribution ports. Didn't seem to damage or over-heat but I have gotten in the habit of checking afer every race and changing them out after ~ 3 races. Other than that, the units seem well build and they are clean and simple.

Hope that helps
Mike
