Manitie,
The time trails they ran, was the first time that P1 organisned it just to entertain the spectators, instead of cancelling the event, they just improvised. which in my opinion they did a great job. As for the normal race course the supersport class cannot go over 75mph average for each lap, and a straight line speed of 80mph, but I don't know if they are able to check the straight line speed in normal racing conditions, because if you see the video's of last year's races, you will notice that some supersport boats ran very close to the evolution class boats from the green flag to the first buoy. So, the time trials were also ran last year in Germany. There were no speed restrictions in the time trials, so we were able to run as fast as we like. Only problem was that all the boats were full of fuel and propped for rough water, as right up to the last minute, we were expecting to race offshore. It was run like a kilo run, except that the distance was about 1.3 miles ... see the times and speeds for supersport at: http://www.extremeboat.com/racerepor...e%20Report.htm In both classes, there is NO speed limit ... only a maximum average speed over the course of the race, not per lap. Last year it was an average speed per lap The system does work well as it stops "check book racing", but we are hoping that next year, they will drop the average speed rule, and rely on the power to weight ratios (already in the rules) to control the speed of the boats. In SuperSport, you need to weigh 4.5kg for every 1hp, so our Dragon weighs about 10,300lbs!!! We had to add about 3,000lbs weight. In Evolution, you need to weigh 3.5kg for every 1hp with a minimum weight of 4,250kg. This means Mike Fiore had to add a LOT of weight to his Outerlimits to race in Malta. |

Not necessarily the case. At the Cowes race last year, a couple of boats were disqualified in the first of the two races due to exceeding the speed limit.
But you are right ... in flat water with long legs on a course, we do hit the average speed restrictions. |

congrats for Extremeboat/Dragon.
In my opinion all the boats that finished on Saturday's race they are all winners considering that they had 15to 20 foot waves to negotiate. As for the time trials, all boats that took part went over 80mph, but the 80mph speed limit is for when they race the course.
