VICTORY VERSUS VICTORY FOR THE WORLD TITLE!
Monday, 1 December, DUBAI (UAE): The Victory Team will be looking to wrap up their eighth World Championship in the Mina Seyahi Grand Prix in Dubai, the penultimate race of the season on Saturday, 6 December, by bringing both their boats home ahead of their Qatari rivals, who still pose a mathematical but improbable outside threat to their title.

Four wins this season for Victory 1 and five podium finishes for Victory 7 have put the Dubai boats respectively 33 and 18 points clear of Abdullah Al-Sulaiti and Matteo Nicolini in Qatar 95 and in an almost unassailable position, with the luxury of an in-house fight for the title.

Victory 1 is the clear favourite; they lead the World, Middle East and Edox Pole Position Championships comfortably and another win will all but guarantee Mohammed Al Marri his second World title and Nadir Bin Hendi his first. But the Dubai crew has already seen one title slip through their fingers this year from what seemed an unassailable position. And if Victory 7’s rookie driver Abdullah Al Mehairbi and defending World Champion, Jean-Marc Sanchez, take the win and their team-mates falter or finish outside the top three, the title race will go to the wire and be decided in the Emirates and Dubai Duty Free Grand Prix on Saturday, 13 December.

The Qatar Team has one last throw of the dice to try to turn around a season that promised so much but so far has failed to deliver the success that was expected. Their flickering title hopes rest with both Victory outfits breaking and posting only a handful of points, so realistically, they will be fighting each other for third place in the overall Championship standings, with both the Qatar 95 crew and Sheikh Hassan and Steve Curtis in Qatar 96 looking for their first wins of the season.

Jotun’s Inge Brigt Aarbakke and Jorn Tandberg will be hoping for a return to winning ways in Dubai, with the 2008 European Champions aiming to finish the season as the top European outfit in the overall standings and in the Edox Pole Position Championship.

The target for Foresti & Suardi’s Italian-Norwegian pairing of Montavoci and Selmer, who currently head the middle order, is to continue their season-long run of reliability, complete the season without any technical hitches and to finish as the highest-placed European team in the Middle East Championship. But to do so, first they must fend of the challenge from Chris Parsonage and Billy Moore, retained to take the sticks in Negotiator following the Anglo-American pairing's impressive third place in their first outing together in the Egyptian Grand Prix in Porto Marina in October - currently tied with them in fourth place.

SeveneleveN’s Giorgio Manuzzi and Nicola Giorgi will be looking to complete their season of development as they started, by taking their third top-six finish of the year. Domenico Cirilli returns to competitive duties after missing the last race to partner Sergio Carrasco for his first outing in Spirit of Spain, with Giovanni Carpitella switching cockpits to partner Class 1 rookie, Abdelkader Ahmed in Roscioli Hotels Roma. And the 2007/8 Australian Offshore Superboat Champions, Tom Barry-Cotter and Pal Virik Nilsen, make their second appearance of the year in Class 1 and will showcase the newest Class 1 ‘spec’ raceboat, designed and built by Australia’s premiere manufacturer of long-range luxury motoryachts, Maritimo.

Eleven boats will line up for the 21-lap, 97.21Nm Mina Seyahi Grand Prix; first official practice takes place on Thursday, 4 December (12.00-14.00) followed by a second session on Friday morning (10.00-11.30) and the Edox Pole Position at 14.30. Final practice is on Saturday morning (10.00-11.00) with the Mina Seyahi Grand Prix starting at 14.30.

Let's not forget Jim Dyke was the last American to win in Class 1... 2000 in Trieste, maybe Billy can bump that up for the US.

Its been a long time either way, not since the likes of Tomlinson, Scism, Dyke, Gilbreath and Alcone in the late nineties has a dominant American raced over there. Good to see Billy holding the flag up for the US.

I think some forget that in the mid to late nineties, Americans ran some of the best teams over there with many wins and championships to back it up.

Then Curtis took over. :drink:

VICTORY POISED TO LIFT WORLD TITLE
Thursday, 4 December, DUBAI (UAE): Dubai’s Victory Team stand poised to lift their eighth World Championship in this weekend’s Mina Seyahi Grand Prix, the penultimate race of the season, but will err on the side of caution, knowing that they do not need the win to wrap up the title. "Getting to the end of the race is vital and if we do that we are in a very good position." said Victory’s general manager, Gianfranco Venturelli. "Our focus is, of course, the World Championship and our strategy is simple. The instruction to both crews is to run a clever race, not to get involved in a fight for the win, and above all, not to take any risks."

Victory 1’s Mohammed Al Marri and Nadir Bin Hendi lead the title race by 15 points and know their biggest threat comes from their team-mates, Abdullah Al Mehairbi and Jean-Marc Sanchez, but Venturelli has said that there are no real team orders. "They have to be sensible and must not fight each other," he said. "The Victory 7 crew knows that Victory 1 has the best chance of winning the title and must not put any obstacles in their way."

For Victory’s rivals the target is to fight each other for the race win, and in today’s first official practice session it was Qatar 95’s Abdullah Al-Sulaiti and Matteo Nicolini, currently lying in third place in the Championship standings and a point ahead of their team-mates, who posted the fastest time of 2m 53.10s on their one and only timed lap, with Victory 1 and 7, second and third quickest respectively. "This was our first chance to run our new Sterling engines and to go quickest is very encouraging. Although they have the same power, the power-curve is better, and this will make us very competitive," said Matteo Nicolini.

Jotun’s Inge Brigt Aarbakke and Jorn Tandberg used the session primarily to shake down a new pair of Mercury V8s and to give Aarbakke, racing in Dubai for the first time, an opportunity to familiarise himself with the course.

Despite posting the fifth fastest time, Foresti & Suardi’s Giampaolo Montavoci was far from happy with the performance from his new propellers and struggled to find the pace he was expecting. Spirit of Spain completed the top six before cutting their session short after breaking a water hose, with team-mates Al Suwaidi and Abdelkader Ahmed going eighth quickest in Roscioli Hotels Roma.

Wild card entry Maritimo unveiled their new Class 1 raceboat, with Tom Barry-Cotter and Pal Virik Nilsen shaking it down for the first time. "There was no need to push it out there. Today was all about getting a feel for the boat and to understand how she handles," said Tom. "She is very light, very flighty and a little tricky to handle in the turns. I think we will add some weight at the front, but what we need now is time in the boat."

For Sheikh Hassan and Steve Curtis the weekend got off to a bad start, with Qatar 96 failing to record a time after a loss of power caused by electrical problems. SeveneleveN and Negotiator also failed to start the session, with the Negotiator crew carrying out repairs to internal structural damage sustained in Egypt.

First official practice:
1. Qatar 95 - A Al-Sulaiti (QAT) / M Nicolini (ITA) – 02.53,10
2. Victory 1 - M Al Marri (UAE) / N Bin Hendi (UAE) – 02.56.01

QATAR 1-2 , 96 (curtis Hassan) takes pole. It's rough for Dubai and we know that's Curtis's water.
Billy 11 sec off pace in Qualifying but Billy's strong in the rough as well and that could equalize the playing field. If they were fixing structure during the week the question remains..Will the boat hold up?

QATAR ONE-TWO IN QUALIFYING
Friday, 5 December, DUBAI (UAE): Qatar 96’s Sheikh Hassan and Steve Curtis will start tomorrow’s Mina Seyahi Grand Prix, the penultimate race of the season, from Pole Position after setting the fastest time in today’s qualifying session, with team-mates Abdullah Al-Sulaiti and Matteo Nicolini second quickest ahead of Victory 1’s Mohammed Al Marri and Nadir Bin Hendi.

Today’s win for Sheikh Hassan and Curtis, their third of the season, was a must if they were to reduce the 11-point deficit to Victory 1 and stay in the fight for the Edox Pole Position Championship. And with Qatar 95 producing their best qualifying performance of the season to take second spot, the lead is now down to just three points, with Victory 1 and Qatar 96 going head-to-head in the final round next weekend for the title. "This was an excellent result for the team and our target now is to do the same in tomorrow’s race," said Sheikh Hassan. "We have shown here, and in Egypt, that we our very strong in rough seas. Our only concern was that conditions might deteriorate, so it was important to make our first run count."

With the threat of bad weather closing-in during the 75 minute session, the top five oufits went out early. The opening exchanges saw Victory 1 set the early pace, posting a time of 2m 51,90s, with Qatar 95 and Victory 7 both falling short. Qatar 96 then produced a stunning opening gambit – a repeat of their opening qualifying lap in Egypt – going six seconds quicker in a time of 2m 45,09s to secure the pole, with Jotun following them out onto the water to go third quickest in 2m 52,07.

Qatar 95’s second run saw them improve and move into second place, and then go even quicker on their next two runs, producing their best time of the afternoon, 2m 48,43s on their fourth and final lap. " A Qatar one-two in Dubai – it doesn’t get much better than that. " said Al-Sulaiti. "Matteo was pushing very hard and in the conditions it was quite a challenge. But we took some risks and they paid off."

Victory 1 also improved on their opening time, but failed to match either of the Qatar boats to qualify in third place, with Victory 7 shaving three seconds off their time on their third run to jump ahead of Jotun, with Negotiator completing the top six.

Allen and I are here in Dubai for the race and we're coming back over for next week's race. We saw Jon Maas, Steve Lippincott and Steve Curtis. Haven't seen Billy Moore yet but will today. Haven't seen Jimmy Winters either.

I had a great meeting with the WPPA officials. More on that later...

The weather is outstanding. The amount of money the team owners put into racing just boggles the mind. And the logistics of getting the boats and haulers from Moscow to Qatar and all points in between is a monumental task.

Round 2 and it looks like everyone will make the start. I think you will see Qatar 96 walk away with the win.

VICTORY CHASING DOWN TITLE TREBLE
Wednesday, 10 December, DUBAI (UAE): Victory Team will be looking to cap a brilliant season by adding the Middle East and Edox Pole Position Championships to the World crown they lifted last week, after finishing first and second in the Mina Seyahi Grand Prix.

Victory 1’s Mohammed Al Marri and Nadir Bin Hendi head the Edox Pole Position and Middle East Championships, and will line up for the Emirates and Dubai Duty Free Grand Prix as favourites to complete an impressive treble.

The only threat to their possible treble comes from Sheikh Hassan and Steve Curtis, with the Qatar 96 crew desperate to salvage something from a disappointing season by completing a hat-trick of wins in qualifying to secure a first Pole Position title for Sheikh Hassan and a remarkable straight eighth title for Curtis. But failure to win in qualifying and in the Emirates and Dubai Duty Free Grand Prix would see the eight times World Champion without a race-win or a title for the first time in 12 years.

With the title and the runners-up slot in the World Championship already secured by Victory 1 and Abdullah Al-Mehairbi and Jean-Marc Sanchez in Victory 7, the battle for third place is a three-way fight between both Qatar outfits and Jotun, with Abdullah Al-Sulaiti and Matteo Nicolini in Qatar 95 holding the upper hand.

Victory also dominates the Middle East standings, leaving another three-way fight for third place, with Foresti & Suardi’s Giampaolo Montavoci and Kolbjorn Selmer fighting with the Qatar boats as they bid to finish as the highest-placed European crew.

After taking his first Class 1 podium last week - finishing third - Giorgioffshore’s Nicola Giorgi has confirmed that he will run with the team’s test driver, Riccardo Calugi. Tom Barry-Cotter and Pal Virik Nilsen have used the break between races to test and make modifications to the new Maritimo raceboat, with the Australian-Norwegian pairing looking for a second top six finish in Saturday’s final race of the season.

Roscioli Hotels Roma and Spirit of Spain will hope that engine changes to both boats will resolve the issues that curtailed their last race early in proceedings, whilst Foresti & Suardi has repaired the damage they sustained and Negotiator and Jotun have resolved the problems that prevented both from starting last time out.

Eleven boats will line up for the 21-lap, 97.21Nm Emirates and Dubai Duty Free Grand Prix; first official practice takes place on Thursday, 11 December (12.00-13.00) followed by a second session on Friday morning (10.00-11.30) and the Edox Pole Position at 14.30. Final practice is on Saturday morning (09.30 -10.30) followed by the Emirates and Dubai Duty Free Grand Prix starting at 14.30.

Victory 1 secures world Class 1 offshore title in Dubai

Dubai's Victory Team celebrated their eighth World Championship success in sixteen years on Saturday after Victory 1's Mohammed Al Marri and Nadir Bin Hendi led home their team-mates, Abdullah Al Mehairbi and Jean-Marc Sanchez driving Victory 7, to complete the team's third one-two finish of the season in the Mina Seyahi Grand Prix. Nicola Giorgi and Giorgio Manuzzi celebrated their first Class 1 podium after bringing SeveneleveN home in third place.

The newly crowned world champions knew that they did not have to fight for the win to lift the title, and were happy to let Sheikh Hassan and Steve Curtis - both desperate to take their first win of the season - disappear into the distance in Qatar 96, and run in second spot. But on lap 15, Qatar 96 slowed dramatically, handing the lead to Victory 1 and a second world title to Al Marri and a first for Bin Hendi.

"It is a great feeling to have regained my world title," said Mohammed Al Marri. "The boat has run perfectly all season and today was the same. Our strategy all weekend was to play it safe, and we were happy to run in second behind Qatar 96 at the start knowing we just needed points. It's been a great team performance all year."

Victory 7 once again produced a strong performance, with Abdullah Al Mehairbi and outgoing World Champion, Jean-Marc Sanchez, taking their sixth podium of the season to secure the runners-up slot in the Championship standings.

"It is all about team-work," said Sanchez. "We made a good start and saw Victory 1 on our inside at the first turn. We let them go and then just sat in behind them."

For SeveneleveN's Nicola Giorgi and Giorgio Manuzzi, the only boat other than both Victory outfits to complete 21 laps, third place was well deserved and a just reward for all the work the team has put in this season to develop their new boat.

"I had a good feeling after today's practice that we were going to do something special," said Nicola Giorgi. "It was quite rough out there, but this suited our boat. I think we have proved today that Giorgioffshore is heading in the right direction."

Fourth place for Qatar 95 was little consolation for the team, who, for the second consecutive race, saw a huge race-lead disappear due to unreliability.

"We are disappointed with fourth position," admitted Matteo Nicolini. "This boat is very difficult to drive when it is heavy and full of fuel and we had two spin-outs on the turns. But we managed to recover and were chasing down SeveneleveN when one of the engines lost pressure and we had no power to catch them. Now we must try our best next weekend to get a podium."

For Sheikh Hassan and Steve Curtis, their hopes of a race win ended after leading from the flag and for 15 of the 21 laps.

"It is just not our year," said a disappointed Curtis. "We had a massive 50 second or so lead and then we had a problem with the drop box and that was the end of that. It's very disappointing. Now we must look to next weekend and try and win the Edox Pole Position and again go for the race win to salvage something from this season."

For four crews there was disappointment and frustration; Roscioli Hotels Roma stopped on lap two, after seeing their team-mates, Spirit of Spain, go out on the opening lap, with both Negotiator and Jotun failing to make the start line.

6500 for the class 1 merc setup. the sterling turns a little higher, don't know the exact number. The 850 is 6k.

I was just told that Negotiator had a main water hose fail right before the start of the race last week causing them not to start.

Qatar 95 takes the win! 96 out again.... Here's a report from Alan Campbell:

They started all eleven boats, most finished and there was actually some exciting racing. Qatar 95 won with Victory 1 and 7 rounding out the top three. Jotun put on a good show before they lost a prop. They started third, were fifth after the first turn and worked their way up to second behind Qatar 95. They were gaining on them and about 8 seconds behind, when they went out with about 5 laps to go. It would have made an incredible finish if they had closed and were trying to pass on the last couple of laps. When Jotun went out it made a normal finish with no contests toward the end. Steve Curtis was fourth when they went out somewhere in the first half of the race and never threatened for the lead this time.

I did see Tom Abrams and spoke with him a bit. Also spoke to Billy Moore who is flying back with us tomorrow night. . I found Jon and thanked him again. He was a little bummed out about their finish but I told him they put on a great show while they were running. The crew really enjoyed the whole experience; the race, the dry pits and meeting some of the driving crew. We had lunch in the Jotun hospitality tent . Good seats and the announcer was actually better this time. The Maritimo boat spun out just at the end of the S turns and sustained some fiberglass damage. We saw the spin and saw the boat afterward on the trailer. Fortunately they kept it right side up. With just that rudder in the water they may be more susceptible to spinning. That was the only accident of the day. Water was about the same as last week but they decided not to do the long laps to save some wear and tear on the boats. Still 21 laps and it took about one hour. Weather was excellent.
