Marine club severs ties with UIM

Dubai: The Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) has vowed it will never host an event under the auspices of the world governing body for motorsports - Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM).

"Next weekend's Class One Offshore race will be the last event that we will host under the banner of the UIM," Saeed Hareb, Managing Director of DIMC told Gulf News.

"From next season we will have nothing to do with the UIM," Hareb fumed.

Since the last two years, Dubai has been at loggerheads with the world governing body for watersports due to certain alleged lapses on the part of the UIM.

The Mina Seyahi area covers a part of Jumeirah Beach and includes the DIMC that was formed in 1986.

The marine club was the first development, formed in 1986 to form a solid organisational base for Offshore powerboat racing.

Disregarding rules

"But they have somehow conveniently forgotten what Dubai has done to promote watersports in the Middle East," Hareb charged.

Things between the DIMC boss and the UIM came to a boil in 2006 when Hareb claimed that a representative from the world governing body for watersports had deliberately disregarded rules.

Hareb resigned not only from his position, but also floated the breakaway World Professional Powerboat Association (WPPA) in December 2006.

Along with the International Offshore Team Association (IOTA), the new body forged a strong alliance to run a highly successful Class One calendar for 2007 with the Dubai-based Victory Team clinching the world title.

The more recent development is the UIM decision to turn down a request from the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club (ADIMSC) to host and promote a calendar for a F2000 Powerboat Championship.

"It all started with the UIM starting this thing against me personally, and now they have slighted a watersports body from the UAE who wants to promote the sport in the region," Hareb stated.

"They have hurt us twice in the past and we have supported them despite these insults. But now we can no longer associate with them as we seem to be at two different wave lengths," Hareb said.

The DIMC, that hosts two rounds on the Class One World Powerboat Championship, was the first to join the UIM way back in 1990. "And each year we got better, not only in terms of hosting the rounds, but also encouraging other venues in the region to join us," Hareb noted.

"We have the Victory Team and the Abu Dhabi F1 Team who have established themselves as true world champions. But this constant instances of unprofessionalism from the UIM has to stop," Hareb explained.

With things coming to a boil between Dubai and the UIM, much will depend on a special meeting of the UAE Marine Sports Federation scheduled for Wednesday.

"We are united for the sake of the sport, but we need to be professional in our dealings," Hareb said

the UIM serves no useful purpose.... suprised it took the DIMC (and I am sure the WPPA soon) this long to break away again.
