Default First news from Savannah Kilo Runs

This just in:

Due to time constraints, Randy had to throw the Black Beauty into the water completely untested.

On his GPS, his max speed was 85 mph, both ways.

Randy is waiting for the results as we speak.

"After the run, everybody came to the boat like bees to honey," reported a thoroughly happy Randy Schleuss after the Kilo runs in Savannah, which are the first event of the weekend's APBA sanctioned race.

Randy's Black Beauty, a 29 foot Kryptonite powered by a HP525, was finished on Wednesday noon at the Eastport, Long Island location of Kryptonite. After a short test, the boat was loaded on a trailer and driven down the East Coast for the debut at the Savannah race.

There was no time to test the boat on Thursday night. Also, the opportunity to test the boat on Friday morning evaporated. The Black Beauty was entered in the run completely untested. If there ever was truth in "run what you brung," then this time.

Randy's GPS-powered Monster speedometer was showing a max speed of 85 mph. The way Randy and Glenn are driving, average speed should be around 82-83 mph. Spectators in Savannah could hear the rev limiter hitting several times, which means that the boat is good for even more speed when properly propped.

They racing community appears to be divided over the boat. Some are in love. Some are clearly intimitaded. According to Randy, their usual comment is: "This chit is effing fast."

On Tuesday night, Randy Schleuss, the reigning World Champion of F1, had thoughts about selling all his boats. Including the new one. These thoughts are now forgotten. His previous boat, a white 98 Kryptonite, is now definitely for sale.

Official results shoult be in at approx 5pm EDT. Inofficially, it looks like nobody in F1 was faster that Randy, Glenn and the Black Beauty.

Note: This is with an absolutely APBA legal boat, which has to weigh 350 lbs more if powered with a HP525.

Next week, the Black Beauty's sistership (tentatively named "White Trash") will be splashed. It does not carry that weight, has 7 inch setback due to ITS, and a slightly raised X. After today's results, I expect the GPS speedo to hit the big 9.

Ok, folks.

Official Kilo results just went up.

Randy & Glenn & Black Beauty were fastest in F1 with an 82.9 average. They beat the second boat by about a mile.

But: Next to Randy & Glenn's name there is a "DQ."

They immediately wanted to know what and why. They could not get an answer. They were promised that it would be explained later.

DQ or not: They are the fastest boat. And the controversy continues.

Verrry strange: Randy and Glenn didn't miss any buoys (this time.) According to the race officials, their boat was "too far to the North of the course."

Randy will have a meeting with Alweiss and will protest.

While we are waiting for the results of the debate - what's at risk? According to the APBA-Offshore website, a team gets 5 points for entering the race, plus two points for each boat beaten. Chump change. But always nice to have.

According to Randy, he will get the 5 points for showing up, but not the 10 points for beating 5 other boats in F1.

Let's just hope this is something that can be resolved.

This is the course, right off the APBA site. Pretty hard to go too far North. Maybe Randy went overland this time to make it more interesting.

I can imagine that there are some people who would like to see Randy and Glenn DQ'd and DQ'd again, because that seems to be the only way to keep them from winning.

Armchair analysis:

- The HP 525 is well received, but some boats had problems with the weight they had to add to comply w/ APBA rules.

- The Sportsmaster drive was roundabout booed, it was seen as a measure to make boats slower. Several racers are known to remove the Sportsmaster when running non-APBA races.

- Randy's Kryptonite is the first F1 boat to see substantial speed gains with that setup. Kirk Rogers at Kryptonite clearly hasn't been asleep. Them hitting the rev limiter several times means that there still is some speed to be gained with a little tweaking.

- Now being the fastest boat doesn't guarantee being first. The river and the ocean can be quite different. But Randy & Glenn are at home in big water. And with a boat that fast , they'll have to put ball & chain on the Black Beauty to keep them from winning.
